Title: Magdalene Asylum
Post by: ascot123 on Wednesday 28 March 18 15:43 BST (UK)
Just discovered that a relative died in the Asylum in 1914.
Is she likely to have been buried in the Magdalene graveyard? How can I find out.

I cannot find a birth registration her child as I dearly want to know what happened to him/her.
I assume it would have been registered under her surname.

Can anyone help or suggest how I find out burial site and birth, please?
Many thanks

If you can give us the Surname and an idea when the child was born perhaps we can help find the birth cert, have you tried searching for Unknown and the surname often children were registered without a first name.

Thanks for the replies.

I had a look at all the sites listed before posting.
Not listed on grave site, probably not even got a marked grave as she was an inmate! Still shocked at finding my Great Aunt ended up there.

Rose Anne Nixon died in Magdalene Asylum Galway in1914, listed as 35 actually 33 as she born in 1881.
Cannot find any B or D listing for child Nixon in Galway or anywhere else in Ireland around poss. time.

Is this her working in the laundry in 1911 if so the baby was likely born before 1911

Rosanna aged 30 born Sligo

It's also possible the baby was born before she was sent to the laundry.

Yes that`s her, the Census is how I found her.
I search 1899 until 1914 without a hit.
Paid special attention to Sligo, Leitrim and Galway as all family connections.
In 1910 her father died so she was on her own, but could have been working anywhere!
I even looked at other names as long as mother was Nixon, in case a fathers name recorded.

The women in that laundry are all quite old, I had a go a looking for births for children to some of the more unusual names and the only one I've found so far is Rose Mannion who had her child in the Workhouse in 1903.
I haven't found any registered from the Laundry so far so it may be the case the children weren't born there and of course if the child was still born it won't be registered.

I should add I only looked from 1901 to 1912, in 1901 the women aren't named only initials.

The likes of http://jfmresearch.com/home/preserving-magdalene-history/galway/  might be able to advise what records, if any, were kept, were babies registered, or not etc....

Thank you both I will have a look at the site. I also looked up infant deaths with no luck as I did not know if stillborn children were registered.

Stillborn children wouldn't have been registered in 1914.

Wanted you all to know that I found the grave of my G Aunt Rose Anne Nixon.
We can now rest easy and pray for her knowing she is in a marked grave.
Wrote to Sisters of Mercy and they kindly replied with a photograph of grave. Asked all questions listed on Magdalene Asylum website, unfortunately no info available due to lack of records.

For those who may be related --
