Looking for family and information on George and Mary E G underwood who lived in Northampton.
Hi. I am trying to complete my grandma's side of family tree.and i am struggling to find her father George Underwood. My grandma was born Kathleen pamela may underwood (born 1929). Her father was George underwood believed to be (born 1897. However on the census transcription it says 1907 but on actuall image it looks 1897) And her mother was mary E G underwood (puttnam) (born 1897) They married in 1924 in Northampton and on 1939 census they lived at Gladstone road. Northampton with their children Betty V underwood(born 1926), Edwin G underwood (1927), Jean underwood (1922), david J underwood (1937), kathleen pamela may underwood (my grandma) (1929). Kathleen underwood moved to Leicester and married Ernest mansfield (my grandad) kathleen never spoke of her family so unsure if they moved to leicester also or whether she came on her own as a young adult. Unfortunatly both kathleen and ernest have passed. I am on find my past and the only records i can find on George and Mary are the 1939 census and Mary's birth. The only other birth record for a George Underwood for 1897 in northampton is George born in yardley hastings to parents of emma Kate underwood and Ben underwood. Anyone know of this family or are relatives i would love to be able to find out more .

Which census is that?
You may need to get the marriage certificate for George and Mary E G to find out who his father was.
He may not have been born in Northamptonshire.
I can't see a birth for Mary E G Puttnam either.
-
Have you got a death for him? Is this it? If so the birth on the 1939 looks completely wrong.
George Underwood
Death Age: 78
Birth : 29 Oct 1897
Registration Date: Jun 1976
Northampton Northamptonshire
Volume: 7
Page: 2513

I am also puzzled that you say you have Mary’s birth - can you point us to it? Was she born in Lancashire? There are some Woolwich-born Puttnams traceable in Northampton with Lancastrian Puttnam nieces staying, including a Preston-born Mary of the right sort of age But it would be a shame to spend time on them if you already know Mary’s roots.
-
Who does George give as his father on his marriage certificate? On the 1901 Ben Underwood is a shoe finisher - does that match the occupation of his father on the certificate?
(Looks as if Ben had died by 1911)

Hi.
I have Mary's roots. She was born in Lancashire it is the same person you have mentioned. However George is cannot seem to find any information on him and where he came from. My grandmas marraige certifcate states George Underwood is deseased at time of marraige which was 1953 but i cant find a George anywhere with the date of birth and a death between 1940-1953 (as he was alive on the 1939 census
Thanks

Please can you point us to Mary’s birth so that we can help you find her death, and thus identify whether the couple stayed in Northampton or moved away. Then we will have a better chance of helping you trace George.
Was she born as Puttnam? Or Gunnery perhaps? I can see the Alfred Puttnam marriage to Elizabeth Gunnery in Warrington in 1901, but that of course is after Mary’s expected birthdate.
-
Hi.
I do not have the marraige cert for George and Mary underwood i will be requesting this. On my grandma's marraige cert is says her father George underwood was deceased therfore he would have died between 1939-1953 as he is recorded on the 1939 register
Thanks

To get any further back, I think you need George's marriage as that hopefully will show you if he is Ben's son and so the one born 1897.
Thanks avm! One of the threads needs to be closed to prevent duplication. Threads merged.

After searching the only birth record i came across on find my past that would make sense is:
Mary Elizabeth "goonery" (could be a misspell fpr Gunnery which i found lots of on find my past) born 1897 2 quarter and born in Wigan. This may be her i believe as your right her parents where married after she was born.
I know may was born in wigan as it states on a 1901 census where she is living with her father alfred henry, mother Bessies and sister Nellie. Nellie was born in warrington. Both children came to northampton and lived separatly with aunties and uncle. Unsure reason why and what happened to their parents. I know Alfred's father was a gunner and travelled in the milatary and Alfred was born in wales. However his siblings were born in a woolwich. I think it all connects!
-
Yes I see.
So her middle initials E G at marriage are likely to stand for Elizabeth Gunnery (or similar).
Goonery is how the GRO have the birth registration (no separate mother’s maiden name, so almost certainly born out of wedlock) but it must be her I agree.

The death for Mary E Underwood in Northampton, Jun qtr 1947 aged 48 looks a possibility - age just a year or two out.
-
I have ordered Mary Puttnam and George Underwood's wedding certificate so should have more answers soon. I am new to all this so thank you all for your help. My father has also passed away so dont really have much about his family and trying to build up a family tree. Would love to find out if Kathleen's siblings or any reletives are still around in Northampton.

Great - do update the thread when the certificate arrives, and we can help you take it further from there.

Thank you so much. Is there a way to find out where people are buried if know area they lived in?
-
The George Underwood , Parents Ben/Emma Kate, was Bapt 21 Feb 1897 and Birth was 7 Jan 1897
Fathers Occp Finisher
(Source FreeREG)
So doesnt match birth on 1976 death reg.
This George above also died in WW1, War Records info on Anc has same address as 1911 Census where George is with his widowed Mother Emma Kate and siblings.
-
Hi. The George who died in 1976 isnt the George i am looking for as i know he passed before 1953 does that mean its not the george with parents ben and Emma? Waiting for marragie cert to give me answers bu i cant wait 4 weeks 😣
-
Yes definitely not yours the one with Parents Ben/Emma
You quote a Census that has George born c 1907. Which Census is that?
What is his dob/pob on the 1939 register?
-
Sorry to confuse; George, Parents Ben/Emma died WW1.
The 1976 death reg at this stage is hard to pin down as to who he was.
-
Is it 1907 on the 1939 Register?
-
Hi. The 1939 register shows george underwood living with mary underwood and thier children at gladstone road, northampton. The Dob on transcription says birth 16th feb 1907 however the actual document looks like is says 1897. He was a bricklayer by trade on the register. But on the wedding certificate of my grandmas in 1953 its states george was a shoe clicker.
-
The Dob on transcription says birth 16th feb 1907 however the actual document looks like is says 1897.
Transcription looks correct to me.
-
If it is 1907 that would make him 16 when he got married in 1924? She was 10 years his senior. I cant find any George underwoods either for 1907 😣
-
I can back soon :)
-
Closest I can find;
Death Reg;
Dec 1940
Underwood, George V, age 35***, Wellingbro', 3b 343
This one appears to be Bapt 30 Aug 1906 Rushden as GEORGE VICTOR Underwood to FREDERICK JOHN and MARY
Abode 14 Bedford St
Fathers occp Shoe Finisher
Anyhow all of this is supposition until the M/C arrives.
Trish :)
