Definitely military. The Police copied it.
Could do with a better image of just the helmet plate.
Possibly Leics. Regt. or King's Own Lancaster Regt. which looks a better fit.
Where did he live?

I have asked for a better scan and where the chap hails from.

The photo looks to be 1880's/90's & the white cuffs may denote Militia rather than full timer but someone with more knowledge may know better.

Good evening,

The style of cuff, jampot, tell us it is post 1881 and pre ww1. The colour of the facings, collar and cuffs, tell us it is a non royal regt. So not 1st to 25th foot as they were before 1881. Not Irish or Scottish either.

Tunic will be red with the white facings. The only real clue is the helmet plate but can't make out the centre badge in that plate.

Back again,

It looks to me like sphinx in the centre, used by several regts. Not Lincolnshires,Leicestershires or Lancasters, they are all royal regts so blue facings.

Possibles are Glosters, East Lancs and South Lancs who all had a sphinx.

I wondered about it being the Sphinx that's why I've asked for a better scan, however it seems to have a "tail" hence the King's Own.

The Leicestershire Regiment didn't become the Royal Leicestershire Regiment until 1946.

Good afternoon,

They may not have had royal in the title but were still a royal regt. 1st to 25th foot, pre 1881 titles, were all royal regts.

Leicesters were 17th foot, Leicester regt after 1881. All royal regts had blue facings after 1881not white as the man in the photo.

Added, Kings Own Royal Lancaster Regt were 4th foot. Again one of the royal regts with blue facings not white.

Would this also apply to Volunteer/Militia ?

Good evening,

As far as militia go, yes, the militia battalions were a volunteer part of each county regt. Normally they are the 3rd and 4th battalions but that depends on how many regular battalions there are.

Volunteers wore different uniforms and while particular to the different counties were not actually part of the county regts.

Militia battalions can usually be identified by the austrian knots on the cuffs.
