Hi
I'm looking into my husband's side of the family and have hit a brick wall. Jane Darton is proving very elusive!
Jane Darton married Frederick Hamblin 10 May 1846 in Sherborne. Their witnesses were Joseph Hamblin (Frederick's father) and James Bozwell. John Darton is given as Jane's father.
I've found them on all the census. Frederick was born 1823 in Sherborne and died 1886 in Kent. Jane was born 1819 in Plymouth Devon and died 1902 in Kent.
I can't seem to find Jane's christening or anything else that will help to identify her parents.
If anyone can help I'll be very grateful.
I've also put this message on the Devon board.
Thanks

Have you found Jane on the 1841 census, who is she with?
-
Oh, I think this is her, with the HAWKINS family in Sherborne
HO107/295/47
So no parents there ...
-
Thanks for your reply. Yes I'd found her on 1841. Hawkins don't seem to fit anywhere so guess she was either a visitor or servant.

There is this family living in Sherborne in the 1841 census:
John Darton 35 not in County
John Darton 15
Henry Darton 1 Dorset
John Darton 55
Caroline Darton 15
Jemima Darton 25 Dorset
HO107/295/8 pg 10
Either of these John's could be the witness to Jane's marriage (the 55-59yr old or 35-39yr old) Could be father and brother of Jane? But need to do some more research.

Either of these John's could be the witness to Jane's marriage
There was no witness of that name. See the other thread!
-
In the opening post, Olive said the witnesses were Joseph HAMBLIN and John DARTON?
-
Oh, this is the problem with having two threads. ;D
The John DARTON's in the 1841 census above were both coach builders in later censuses.
-
I am sorry for the confusion I've caused by giving John Darton as a witness. I picked that up from a transcription of Sherborne marriages 1830-1849. The census information on the two John Dartons' looks promising. Thanks

Just posting this from your other thread
There is a marriage in Stoke Damerel of a John Darton occ Coach maker - 6 April 1818 to Ann Pye - both of the parish
-
Doesn't help with finding Jane's parents, but John DARTON (born c1810) was in trouble for arson in 1840. There are various mentions in the newspapers of the time eg:
Royal Cornwall Gazette, April 24, 1840, Issue 3908 .

Maddy there is more information on the other post in case you have not seen it ;) :)

That is interesting. Things like that turn the names into real people.
-
Not sure which thread to post on now! Might be an idea to ask a moderator to merge the two threads?
Possible baptisms of DARTONS that relate to the 1841 census above:
Caroline Louisa - 3 Sep 1826 St James, Bristol (John and Ann)
Modified to add:
4 Nov 1813 - John Plymouth
There are also these possible siblings:
14 April 1816 - James Plymouth
20 June 1822 - Edwin John Plymouth
3 Sep 1826 Eliza Ann St James, Bristol
6 April 1828 Charles Henry Temple, Bristol
(all from familysearch)
-
Thanks. I didn't mean to cause confusion but as Jane was born in Devon and married in Dorset I thought I'd cast the net wide. Merging the threads is a great idea as I'm also getting confused keeping up with all the marvellous replies!

Just adding that witnesses to this marriage were Charles PYE and Elizabeth LEE. (Elizabeth LEE also witnessed a few other marriages at Stoke Damerel around this time.)

Thanks. All these extra bits are a great help.
