Title: Jane Darton b Plymouth 1819 m Sherborne 1846

Hi
I'm looking into my husband's side of the family and have hit a brick wall. Jane Darton is proving very elusive!

Jane Darton married Frederick Hamblin 10 May 1846 in Sherborne. Their witnesses were Joseph Hamblin (Frederick's father) and James Bozwell. John Darton is given as Jane's father.

I've found them on all the census. Frederick was born 1823 in Sherborne and died 1886 in Kent. Jane was born 1819 in Plymouth Devon and died 1902 in Kent.

I can't seem to find Jane's christening or anything else that will help to identify her parents.

If anyone can help I'll be very grateful.

I've also put this message on the Dorset board.

Is there no father's name on the marriage certificate?

Thanks for your reply. I haven't got the marriage certificate yet. I'm hoping that someone might be able to find her christening as that should give both parents names.

The marriage is online on Anc - Jane's father listed as John Darton - Coach Trimmer

You need to start with the marriage record. I've just checked the register page and it shows her father as John Darton, coach trimmer. He did not sign as a witness. The witnesses were Joseph Hamblin and James Bozwell (?).  Bozwell seems to have witnessed all of the marriages around that time.

Thank you both for that information. I now wonder who James Bazwell was. It's good to have her father's name confirmed.

Bozwell/Bazwell was probably a churchwarden - he witnessed a lot of marriages

Now I'm wondering if John Darton may have been deceased before Jane married.

There is a marriage in Stoke Damerel of a John Darton occ Coach maker - 6 April 1818 to Ann Pye - both of the parish

There are other Darton marriages in Sherborne in the 1840's with  father John Darton, coach maker. John Darton/Charlotte Heathman (Frederick Hamblin witnessed that one), Caroline Darton/William Hann.

There's a John Darton burial in Sherborne in 1845 - 17th October, aged 67.
