Title: Samuel Haynes of Kankakee, Illinois
Post by: jibba on Monday 02 April 18 20:48 BST (UK)
This post is a follow up to my search for my ancestor Samuel Sanderson Hayne, b. 1842 Earls Colne, Essex, England. The original post can be found here - http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=674109.msg5755504#msg5755504 (http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=674109.msg5755504#msg5755504)

My Samuel's mother, Sarah, states in her will that "if my son Samuel Sanderson Hayne should return to England, he shall be given £x, else his wife to receive £x for their children." The will was probably made in the early 1870's and read after her death in 1879.

Whilst looking for information regarding Samuel, I found the below entry in the 1900 US Census:

First name(s)    Samuel
Last name    Haynes
Relationship    -
Marital status    Divorced
Gender    Male
Age    58
Birth year    1842
Birth place    England
Parents birth place: England (Both)
Occupation: Printer
City/township    Kankakee
County    Kankakee
State    Illinois

This is a close match except the marital status, seperated/widowed by this time (although his wife had remarried), and occupation. My Samuel was a tailor by trade although I'm aware of printers on his ex-wife's side.

Can anyone help me find more information about this Samuel to determine if they are the same man?

There's a Samuel Haynes on the Kankakee Co. death index who died 25 Aug 1900.  According to the death index here - https://www.ilsos.gov/isavital/deathsrch.jsp - he was age 58 and it looks like he died in Eastern Insane Hospital.

If you look at the image of the census, this Samuel was in the Illinois Eastern Hospital for the Insane then too.  https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MSWL-LCC

There is information about ordering the actual death certificate here:  http://cyberdriveillinois.com/departments/archives/databases/death.html#copies  However, given the time frame and the fact that he was in a hospital long-term before his death, I wouldn't have high hopes of finding parents' names on the death certificate.

There's a Samuel Henry HAYNES b ~1842 in Birmingham who seems to fit a little better with the one in USA.

He's a printer/compositor in 1861:
2132/101/46

This might be him in 1880:

Alice and 2 children are in Chicago in 1900:

Just guessing,of course!

In case it helps to lead to a marriage record, it looks like Alice's maiden name was Ketchum/Ketchun.
