I am interested to know if anyone can find information regarding Nathan Shuttle who was born in the Uk and transported to New South Wales on a charge of stealing. He applied to be married in 1836, and this was granted, but beyond that his UK distant cousins have no idea what happened to him.
Any help would be greatly appreciated and perhaps we have distant cousins still residing in Oz.
Thanks for reading

Original info given was confusion with his father: Nathan Shuttle was 21 when convicted. He was granted a certificate of freedom 17 Apr 1832 and permission to marry Mary Ann Cooper on 15 Nov 1836. Unclear if the marriage took place, as she applied to marry someone else in 1838 under her maiden name."

NB back when Lachlan Macquarie was NSW governor, he organised the admin system ... and as he was a Scotsman, it often followed the Scottish tradition of females retaining their own names rather than becoming known by their NSW married husbands' surnames. So in the official records, just because the Convict Index retains the surname that was on the official records when a female convict arrives, she may have married at any time after her arrival and become known by her husband's name everywhere except in the official records. Also, her sentence 'beyond the seas' effectively ends her UK marriage, and she as well as her UK husband actually becomes free to marry. This has been discussed several times at RChat. May I mention that the (18 July) 1823 UK marriage Act applies, but later ones DO NOT, unless they specifically nominate that they are effective in New South Wales (which was a much larger geographical area than it is today)

Dear Rootschatters,
A huge thank you for all this wonderful information about Nathan Shuttle and his family. I am still working my way through it all but it's both sad in some ways and very interesting in others.
I will enjoy putting all these facts together, and if anything else occurs to any of you I would love to hear it.
Having said that I am extremely grateful for the effort you have all put in already.
From a happy Shuttle descendant
Best wishes

Added: I'm thinking that Sarah may not have been partnered with the elderly Thomas and that the reference to her as mother in her death notice could possibly have been due to the marriages to the daughters. Easier than saying mother and mother-in-law.
