Can anyone get into this site?
I'm getting a page not found message or that I need to be 18 to view site ???
-
Main site seems to be working
http://archive.org/web/
added - I've just done a Rootschat search and it's coming up OK.
-
Bearcat, perhaps your great great grandparents have installed child protection software on your computer.
Martin
-
Just tried the link that Gadget posted and I still need to be over 18 and have my credit card ready ???
I've tried on Google Chrome & Firefox
-
That's very strange - has someone been adjusting your settings?
PS - I tend to use Firefox or Chrome.
-
Try this link just to check:
https://web.archive.org/web/20090221134630/http://rootschat.com/
It's just a random page that I pulled out.
-
Bearcat, seriously I've tried several of my favourite pages and the home page and had no problem at all. I've tried using the Chrome browser on Android and Chrome on Windows 10.
Martin
-
Tried using Gadget most recent link and get This site can’t be reached
web.archive.org unexpectedly closed the connection.
-
I've having the same problem on my iphone - could O2 be the problem??
-
Bearcat, I don't use O2 so I can't comment on that, but are you able to access many other sites without any problem? I can't think how I could create your scenario. That is what I try to do if somebody has a computer problem. I try to think how I could get that to happen and this has defeated me.

Will try on my phone for you :)
-
It's working on my O2 phone
-
Bearcat, following my own advice further up comma are you over 18 and have you got your credit card ready? It's worth a try.
Martin
-
I am over 18 but I don't intend having my credit card ready for anyone.
-
Reasonable!
Martin
-
Bearcat - check your security settings. You might have touched the wrong key or swipped by accident!
What phone are you using?
-
I'll get the children to have a look tomorrow. Odd that it's a problem on my laptop and iphone which I think is an iphone 4.
-
Assuming the children are under 18 it will probably work for them.
Martin
-
Thank you both for trying :D
-
I've just tried with Internet Explorer - at least I get the Wayback Machine homepage but it won't find anything, not even Rootschat :-[
-
Have you got another machine that you could try - maybe local library or next door?
Added - just tried it on my Mac as well and it's working on that no problem.
-
I'll try the library tomorrow.
-
I've never used the Wayback Machine before, but all the links given above have just worked fine for me.
Amusing to be reminded of how Rootschat used to look!
-
The wayback machine is great for finding information that was on now expired websites.

I had a laugh at that and remembered how many of us moaned when it changed :-X
-
If I ever get on the Wayback Machine again I'll check out the old Rootschat. Was it Burgundy and green? I think all forums are blue now.
-
:)
-
Thanks for posting. How long ago was that?
I'm sure than was an even earlier version ???
-
That was Feb 21 2009!
The earliest that I can find is Feb 2004 and there's an earlier one that says it's just registered and is beta testing.
The 2004 one is much the same as the snip that I put up.
-
I've been a member since 2004.
Doesn't time fly when you're enjoying yourself!
I've learnt so much and progressed so far with my research since then.
-
Just wondering if this link will work for you:
http://www.wayback.com/
I gave the modern (parent) one but this still works.
-
web.archive.org unexpectedly closed the connection. :-[
thanks for trying

Hi bearkat,
Could you see if there is a cookie for the site on your hard drive and then remove it? If you try when the cookie is gone, it's like a new connection. Sometimes I've found that works. Hope it does for you. Marion
-
I thought of that but the same thing was happening on the iphone - and she tried two different urls :-\
PS - it's also a free site so it shouldn't prevent access
For more info see
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_Archive
cookie is - PHPSESSID (for archive.org)
-
The ONLY page on the Archive.org site asking for money is on the donate page (as in image) .... normally any other page coming up wanting money indicates possible malware on the users end although getting the same result on different systems is worrisome.
-
Going in via https://archive.org/ then Wayback it is working OK

That bearcat got the same page when trying my link to the old Rootschat page as well as the other 2 links that I gave does suggest that it might well be malware - but on laptop and iphone is very strange :-\
Not sure about the O2 link. I only use it for my phone but bearcat seems to use it for laptop too.
Hallmark - its been working all day for all of us except bearcat!
-
That is not malware, it is the Internet Archive donate page https://archive.org/donate/ In the top left you should see a series of icons which let you search various archives, such as the Web, Text, video etc.

From what I can gather, bearcat, got the messages on both links and when she clicked on my link that was to an old Rootschat page*. She got thrown out on one link. It's all documented in the previous posts.
*Added - this was one of the links tried https://web.archive.org/web/20090221134630/http://rootschat.com/
None of the links that I gave earlier - and used by bearcat - were to the donate page.
-
A big thank you to everyone for their thoughts. My daughter is coming today so will ask her to look for cookies etc.
Due to several recent house moves I only have mobile broadband (hence both phone and broadband being with O2). Although I'm now settled, I'm stuck with the mobile broadband contract for a while. I feel this is an O2 problem. The page asking me to prove that I'm over 18 and to have my credit card ready seems to come from O2.
-
Have you tried any sort of O2 support phone number? I can imagine they're probably as bad as all ISPs for support but it's something to try.
Martin
-
Just to say that I did check the site via my O2 phone and didn't get the message. Also, when I've had to deal with them, they've been very helpful.
Hope your daughter can sort it out.

Sorry I didn't realise you were using mobile broadband on the laptop as well and I believe you are correct in attaching the blame to O2 - a couple of years ago when EE tightened up their internet protocols I was faced with a similar problem when I tried to access Rootschat on my phone - the choice was either provide credit card details or visit an EE shop to have my phone unlocked - I went to the nearest shop and it was unlocked in minutes (after my rant in their premises I'm not sure I'm welcomed back to that particular branch ::) :-X )

The donate page was provided as illustration of the ONLY correct page on the site which asked for money - it was not an illustration of potential malware rather it was to highlight the differences between what Bearkat was seeing and what others were. The page asking for credit card details would appear to be a construct from O2 who have blocked access to the site for some reason known only to them.

As I said in my previous post, I tried accessing the site via O2 on my phone and it was perfectly OK
-
As I said in my previous post, I tried accessing the site via O2 on my phone and it was perfectly OK
I think it may be related to the contract terms or just sheer bad luck (in my own case with EE my daughter was able to access Rootschat with no problem while I was frozen out - part of my rant when they snootily explained to a packed shop that they were blocking certain adult chat sites for "my protection")
-
Perhaps you can access dodgy websites via the Wayback Machine.
-
This on the O2 site:
https://www.o2.co.uk/help/safety-and-security/age-restricted-content-and-age-verification
I don't think that I ever had to prove how old I was but :-\
Added:
How do I prove I’m over 18?
There are two ways you can do this. Once you do, we’ll take off the filters and won’t ask again.
Go to one of our shops with photo ID (passport or driving licence).
Prove you have a credit card. We'll charge £1 to the card, which we'll then refund, either through your bill or with calling credit.
-
Just thinking back, I think I did have to give my DoB on the last contract, so it could be that they're not sure. Are you Pay and Go or Contract?

-
The whole thing is such a palaver.
hallmark's post was interesting as it says I need a credit card (a debit card won't do). I only have a debit card. There isn't an O2 shop in town so I'll need to vist the next town.
-
You could try calling their support line on 202 from your mobile. Worth a try.
-
Generally 02 are very good but this reminds me of when I set up the mobile broadband contract last year. They put the contract on my phone by mistake, meaning I couldn't send or receive calls although I could use the internet. I contacted them by online chat and they said the only way it could be sorted out was to phone them! They suggested I find a phone box (have you seen one recently?) or ask someone if I could use their phone!

...or use an App to get around it?

yeah Rootschat can be quite dodgy - ;D ;D ;D
-
It's all sorted. It's only a website but it just adds to life's little difficulties and so frustrating when it was only me who couldn't access it.
Thank you everyone :D
-
I can't get this site to work again. Can someone else try please?
It's such a useful site for looking at info on lost websites.
-
It's just worked for me
https://archive.org/web/
Gadget
-
No sign of payments or over 18 (as problem you had a while ago) ~
PS - is it O2 again?
-
Thanks for trying.
I can get their homepage (slow to load) but it won't find anything.
I tried on my laptop which has a new internet provider and on my phone (still O2).
-
What are you searching for, bearkat?
-
Working fine for me at the moment - The homepage is a little slow to appear but the site operates well after that initial hitch.
Added : possibly spoke too soon as I am now getting various secure connection errors
-
I've now tried it on my laptop and my O2 phone and it works on both - very quick response too!!
-
Even if I try to search for rootschat I get this message:
This site can’t be reached
web.archive.org took too long to respond.
-
It's working for me on Chrome.
Malky
-
I'm on Chrome
on Edge I get
Hmmm... cannot reach this page
Try this
Make sure that you’ve got the right web address: https://web.archive.org
Perhaps it's my ISP. Anyone else with NOWTV??
