Title: Esther Gertrude Fisher - When did she die?
Post by: klmadz2301 on Saturday 07 April 18 16:20 BST (UK)
Hi everyone

I am looking for a death for Esther Gertrude Fisher. She was born in 1900 in Wandsworth, to Albert Edward Fisher and Catherine Lightfoot Brooker. She is listed in the Probate for Albert in 1943 as a spinster yet i can't find anything on her after the probate. Catherine died in 1937 and their only other child was born and died in 1894.

Any help would be greatly appreciated as I have searched and searched for her.

Hi,

Have you found Esther on the 1939 Register which may record her married name? (providing she married)

I have found her in 1950 living at 17 Muncaster Road but it has her name listed as: Fisher, Esther.G-J.

what does the J stand for as it is in bold.

I know this is her because that is also the address listed for her father before he died and she is listed at that address in 1943 when he died

Free search of 1939 shows an Esther G Fisher bn 1900 living Battersea area - surname amended to Morrison.  Other person in house Albert E bn 1866

The J in bold on an electoral register stands for Juror.  It means that she could be called for Jury service

1955 is the last registry she appears on. So i have at least narrowed down a time frame. but I will investigate more in the morning after some much needed rest :)

I should have said I was looking at the Electoral Register :) After her father dies she is listed with two other people at the same address that she lived in with her parents up until 1955 and then i cant find her on any more electoral registers.

She is also at 17 Muncaster Road just before WW2.

Following Rosie's post I tried for a marriage between a Fisher and a Morrison but failed to find any .....

Have you got her exact date of birth?  Sometimes that helps when looking for a death if you aren't sure of the surname.

Have you ruled out the death in 1969 Southampton?

Age is out but name is correct  :-\

Birth date given as 17 Nov 1890

The point I was making here was that she was still alive up to 1960,whereas the OP thought she may have died when she could no longer find her after 1955.

Maybe she went abroad- or to Scotland or Ireland?

Birth date given as 17 Nov 1890

Esther Gertrude Osland was born in the Dec 1/4 of 1890.

In 1916 she married...

Marriages Dec 1916

Fisher    Hubert G    to Osland    Pewsey    5a   307

Osland    Esther G    to Fisher    Pewsey    5a   307

I think she is the Esther Gertrude Fisher who died in 1969.

Sorry for taking so long to reply.

Just finished doing all the housework. Feeling much refreshed and my eyes want to work.

17 Muncaster Road is the address of Esther and her parents, Albert and Catherine. As far as we are aware Esther never married. She was born in 1900 in Wandsworth. I don't have the exact birth date although she was baptised in 1903

Why would the Surname be amended. She never married, as far as i can find and everything that i do find says she is a spinster. Surely if she married and the husband died she would be classed as a widow and if they divorced or he abandoned her, it would says something to indicate this.

Surnames are amended on the 1939 register if someone marries or changes their name.  The NHS used and updated the register until 1990

As you have the address 17 Muncaster Road perhaps you could ask for an electoral register look up after 1960.

It would mean someone would have to visit archives and possibly order documents in advance so not a quick fix and not guaranteed that you would get a volunteer. You could get it checked for say every 5 or 10 years initially  :-\

Not there after 1960 see reply 27

Well she's not there in 1965,although Mr George B Overton still is.

Nor is she there in 1961.
1962/3/and 4 do not seem to appear in the registers online.

Going through Free BMD's using the forenames Esther Gertrude using a wildcard on the surname, there is an Esther Gertrude Clarke, died in March 1972 Ilkeston. This is the only Esther Gertrude I can find with a 1900 birth, noted as 24th January 1900.
Don't know if it's her or not.

On the 1901 England Census, Esther Gertrude is listed as 11 months old, so that would help narrow down the month of birth

They do not have to pay for it.  Providing the transcription is correct they can just 'play' with the search - ie Search Battersea - name Esther G Fisher - born 1900 - then play with the day /month, it will only bring up the match when the date is correct.

That is spooky. I found the marriage cert of my great grandparents,21 years after the birth of their first of 10 children,on the same date that they actually married...........some 96 years later.

Someone up there is guiding us  ;D

Milliepede: Most of the family were around Battersea and Wandsworth but in the 1959's, I'm not too sure as I havent gotten to the rest of the family. My grandfather and his family left Battersea in 1924 and came to Australia. I think I will have to check where the rest of the family were before i can figure out where and when she died.

Although, her father Albert had several siblings: Frederick William Fisher took off to America when he was 16 years old and never spoke to the family again, Arthur Ernest Fisher and Theoclea Susan Fisher both died before their first birthday. The only other sibling was Alfred Walter Fisher. I haven't done any research on him but he died around 1947, so he might have had children that Esther went to stay with but I will need to research first.

Ive also looked into that Tree and i have found a lot of the information wrong. they have definitely just attached records because the name is correct without making sure its the right person.

I agree that a lot of their records are quite possibly wrong.  They do however link Esther to a Morrison which is the name mentioned on the 1939 register.  Shame they don't mention any place names in the Morrison/Fielding records, I suspect they may have been born out of the UK if they do exist :-\

So far, I haven't come across a Morrison whilst research Esther and her parents so it makes me question where the name has come from in the first place. Esther is a mysterious case for me right now.

The name Morrison has come from her surname being altered by the NHS on their records.  It is unlikely that you would have come across it in her family if it was the surname of her 'partner'

If you were to get a look at the original, they often have a date written in as well, which is when they were notified of the change. Which may or may not help!

She is still at 17 Muncaster Road up to 1960 on the electoral rolls.

The qualifying date for the 1961 register was 10 October 1960 so she was gone by then

There is not an obvious date but a series of numbers which could be a date  ;D   If it is supposed to be a date it would tie in with her departure from electoral registers at Muncaster Road.

Is it worth dropping a line to the person who put the tree on to see where Florence Morrison came from.  If she did have a child and that child had a family would be worth knowing about  :)

Haven't been able to follow up any of the names to see if right or wrong.  Right to take it with a pinch of salt but just in case, as Rosie says the Morrison name is linked to her for some reason.

I think it's a good idea to send them a message if you can. The name Morrison does come into it somehow.
We seem to have completely lost Esther after 1960. She would have been 60, may have retired and gone to live somewhere nice.

Sorry for taking so long to reply. I have already sent the owner of that tree a message, as I needed to ask the owner a question about another person they have listed, and i have sent another regarding Esther and the surname Morrison, but as yet, no response. I will keep waiting but Im not holding my breath in regards to a response.

A question about the 1939 Register on FindMyPast. Does it only show people that were alive in 1939. I have used it to help narrow down the birth dates of some other people in my tree but I have only looked up those that were still alive at the time.

Hi
Yes, we can only see those whose details were taken on 29th September 1939. Any that were missed and done later, or born after, no.
Also, those born less than 100 years ago and who were not noted as having died, or who have not been matched up to a later death record by findmypast, remain redacted. So you shouldn't see any people who are still living (though some cases have been reported!)

Look at https://www.findmypast.co.uk/1939register then scroll down the page, you will see the words What is the 1939 register, some useful info about it there.

It was a snapshot of everyone in the country on 29th Sept 1939-except those who had already left to serve in the forces. It was used for counting people years later when food rationing came in,and also when the start of the NHS came in 1948.

Thank you for the information.

Esther is driving me bonkers, so, for now, i think I will put her on the table and walk away for awhile. My Fisher lineage is so damn big and now spreads across England, USA and Australia, that i'm hoping she will pop up somewhere else with another member of the family.

As for the owner of the tree, still no response, but when I find out any more information, I will let you all know. Thank you so much for the help and the time and effort you have all put in to help me find Esther. I guess our ancestors will be found when they want to be found.
