Hi, some years ago I came up against a brick wall while researching my Grandmothers side of the family and put my researches aside as being unable to progress further.
I have recently picked up the file again and discovered something that I missed before which has restarted my research.
I have a reply to a question I placed on another Genealogy Forum but can't seem to find the Forum any longer.
I have been trying to solve a mystery in my family.
My Grandmothers marriage certificate shows her Fathers name as Jeremiah SULLIVAN.
When I look at the various UK Census records he is listed as Thomas SULLIVAN. The reason I know it is one and the same is because all the family members are correctly listed under him on the Census forms.
Someone, provided me with some information back on 25 January 2013, whose user name was lebeeuk by stating that they had found a record showing Jeremiah Thomas SULLIVAN, but without saying where this record came from.
I am posting this query as I really need to see the record where it shows Jeremiahs middle name as Thomas.
I have looked on the Roman Catholic Parish Registers for Kilcummin Parish, Kerry, Ireland but there is no indication of his middle name that I can see.
His Baptism Date was 23 January 1842.
If anyone can help me find where his middle name is recorded I will be very grateful.

I'm a bit confused.
You said he was baptised 23 Jan 1842
You also mentioned Kilcummin Parish
I can see a Sullivan baptised in Kilcummin on 23 Jan 1842 but I don't think he is a Thomas or Jeremiah.
IrishGenealogy has transcribed him as Dermot.
My Latin isn't great...well non existent, perhaps someone can help with it

I can see how that would equate to the Irish name Dermot

In Ireland Jeremiah and Dermot can be interchangeable.

Okay so if Dermot is Jeremiah the next record to look for would be his marriage.
Who did he marry and where?

Thanks everyone for the responses.
I must admit I was a bit puzzled by what was on the parish register, but I am pretty sure that this is Jeremiah, as his mother I know from family correspondence was Anne Downy, which is reasonably clear on the parish register.
I have ordered a copy of his death certificate in the hope that might throw some light on the mystery.
I will look into his marriage and see if I can establish when and where. I know he married a Hannah SMITH who was born in London, and registered at Pancras. I think they got married around there, but don't know exactly when at the moment.

As he married in the UK apart from his baptism there is unlikely to be any other record of Jeremiah in Ireland so the record lebeeuk found is probably a UK record.
I see FamilySearch transcribe his baptism record a Jeremiah.

Hi, Since five years is rather a long time ago I can't remember the exact record I found but I've been having a look & if you check on Ancestry for the children's school admissions at White Lion Street School "Previously known as PENTON GROVE SCHOOL (see separate list) which opened 1875. Renamed White Lion Street School in 1899" you will find the children all showing as living at 5 Chapel Place as per the 1881 & 1891 Census records and their father is variously named as Thomas, J Thomas & Jeremiah. I'll try to find the actual record I found previously but all the website's have changed since then & records added & removed so it might not be possible.

I have a copy of Jeremiahs death certificate now but as I thought it does not shed any light of the mystery of the use of Thomas.

I don't mean to play devil's advocate here, but wouldn't Demetrius translate to James? Or am I getting my Greek and Latin mixed up?

James is most commonly derived from Iacobus or Iacomus in Latin and Iάκωβος in Greek.
That said, apparently, in parts of America, Jim (and possibly James) have apparently been used for Dimitri/Demetrius (perhaps the same where you are in Australia?).
