Hi,
Can anyone give me any information about a William Penfold who was baptised in Ifield in 1725, his parents being Thomas and Mary Penfold. I believe he may have married a Jane Mann, born 1733, and had a son, Edward, born in 1768.
As far as I have been able to tell, the family, or some of it, continued to live in Ifield until at least the 1880s.
Many thanks
Vanhenry

Sussex Burial Transcriptions have a burial 22 August 1804 for a William Penfold aged 74. Buried at St Margaret, Ifield. Also a burial for Jane Penfold aged 70, buried same place 13 April 1804.

Added: I presume you have seen all the Penfold entries on FreeReg site

Not sure if you have the full 1754 Marriage Record?
William was a Bachelor of the Parish
Jane a Minor of the Parish
Witnesses William Snelling and Martha Mann
Banns, with consent of parents. Groom & witness 1 signed
FreeREG has only 1 childs Bapt to William/Jane in Ifeild
ANN 03 Feb 1755
Their other Children seem to be Bapt Crawley;
John 1756/Mary 1757/Jenney 1758/William 1759/Jenny 1761/Martha 1763
+ of course EDMOND*** 13 March 1768 Crawley
There is also a PHILLY 03 Jan 1773 Crawley to William/Jenny
(Familysearch.Org)
William 1725, Parents Thomas/Mary had a brother THOMAS Bapt 30 Nov 1727 same Parents.
So given that these Burials stand out in Ifield;
THOMAS Penfold Snr 15 Jan 1774
MARY Penfold 07 Dec 1779
Possible Marriage;
22 May 1722, St Mary the Virgin, Shipley
Thos PENFOLD to Mary SAIRS

Thank you all for this information which has opened up a lot for me to think about. With regard to the other baptisms, it looks as if I may have confused the Edward baptised in 1768 with Edmond. I shall have to go back and reconsider what I thought I knew about the family.

Edward/Edmond are both variations of the same name and either can be used.

There is also a EDWARD Penfold Bapt 19 Jun 1768 Shipley to JOHN/SARAH
He may have married Mary ETHERIDGE 13 Oct 1796 same place.
He appears to have died there and buried 21 Jun 1832 age 64 (1768)
I presume yours married 12 Sep 1798 Ifield to Frusnnah BROWN
She was buried as Frusanna Penfold 27 Nov 1812 Ifield age 33 (1779)
Edwards burial was 27 Jan 1820 Ifield age 52 (1768) under PINFOLD on FreeREG

Hi Trish
Many thanks for all this further information. I have been looking at what I have and am now beginning to wonder if I went astray somewhere so I am having to check everything.
I am sure that my Edward Penfold, my great-great-great grandfather, is the one who married Frusanna, or possibly, Susannah, Brown as his son Edward and his wife Elizabeth Booker named one of their ten daughters Frusanna. The Edward who came from Shipley therefore seems unlikely so I do think that he may have been baptised Edmond, which is very confusing.
I will go on thinking about this and thank you for your help.
