Title: SOLVED - Germany, World War I Casualty Lists, 1914-1919 information please
Post by: Gen List Lass on Monday 09 April 18 07:07 BST (UK)
I've found this name Christian Geffert on the casualty lists and I don't know what it says. Is he dead or just injured?  Is gefallen = killed in action?

Also the place (?) names, are they where he was killed/injured or where he was from? And what is the word before his name? Rank?

Feldw. Lt, Christian Geffert, Reitwein, Brandenburg, Gefallen

Feldwebel-Leutnant, Christian Geffert, Reitwein, Brandenburg, (on the Polish border east of Berlin) Gefallen (fallen, killed in action)

The rank of Feldwebel-Leutnant was abolished in 1919.

Davecapps - many thanks for the speedy information!

Does anyone know whether a WW1 German rank such as Feldwebel-Leutnant would be "bought" as a commission or earned on merit?  If the former, it infers a family with a bit of money?

as far as i know the rank was earned on merit. It was comparable to an English warrant officer.

The list relates to 9 Company of 242 Reserve-Infanterie Regiment.  The dates and places above the list - Ypres 1 to 3, 8, 13 to 16 November Broodseinde 13 and 16 November, 4, 5, 7, 8 and 10 December 1914 would appear to refer to the period covered for casualties in that company.

Going back to the other half of your original question, Christian came from Reitwein.

That's interesting Justin, right on the border with Poland (at least it is nowadays!) This might be a link between the German and Russian/Polish parts of the family!

I'm intrigued now. Have you posting anything on the "Russian/Polish parts of the family"?
