I am looking but firstly, she married John Oxley in 1855. His father was George. She gives her age at marriage as 25 which makes her year of birth 1830.

I am surprised this topic has taken a while to be answered, I suspect it is because it is difficult to read :-\

When Sarah married John Oxley she said her father was John Garside occupation Pudler
The occupation of John, the father of Sarah who was baptised at Attercliffe in 1830 parents John & Mary was a Scissor Smith. :-\
Do you have Sarah Oxley with any of the Garside family on census after she marries
-
I really want to try to help with this but it is all a bit uncertain. Gela, where is your fixed point of which you are sure? What about your grandparent who links into this line, have you got certainty from them to Sarah Garside Oxley? I agree with Rosie, the John Garside from Attercliffe in he 1830s who is a scissorsmith is unlikely to be the same John Garside, Puddler in 1855. He could be but it wouldn't be a normal progression.

The Sarah and John Oxley in the 1871 and 1881 census seem correct. John's birthplace is given as Bolton. In the 1861 census John's birthplace is given as Ecclesfield. The children who appear in the 1861 census are John and Walter whereas the ones in the 1871 and 1881 are Henry and Arthur. The name on the 1861 is transcribed as Oxley but could easily be Oakley. The 1861 needs more work. In 1891 we have a widow named Sarah Oxley born in Sheffield with the correct date of birth. Sorry i didn't set it out easier the other day not the most organised got certificates and papers every where and i was tired after searching for her.
Henry Oxley her son is my gg grandfather and he married a Margeret Hartley
For Henry Garside born 1816 he was baptised at Hill Top Chapel of Ease Attercliffe his fathers occupation is showing as Striker
For Anne Garside born 1814 she was baptised again at Hill Top Chapel of Ease Attercliffe and her fathers occupation is showing as Labourer.
on John Oxley and Sarah Garside marriage certificate the witnesses are showing as John Hattersley and Ann Roe but i think Ann Roe is John Oxley's niece.
I found in the Sheffield Independent 17th june 1854 a news article saying a criminal assault was commited upon a girl Sarah Garside of Ecclesfield by a Joseph Calvert and a John Sellars, file cutters of Sheffield Lane .It mentions about Sellars being an old sweet heart and that she had a sister. Again not sure if it's my sarah Garside.
-
Forgot to mention in the 1891 census she is under the surname Axley in Ecclesfiled
-

I think that the eldest child with John & Elenor in 1851 (Mary) could be Elenor's child by another relationship :-\ John is 30 in 1851, Elenor is 40
-
thank you , i've just got in from work going to have another look for her i am determined to find Sarah her and her garside family ,going to try and find out more about the Sarah that was assaulted in 1854 and see if i can find her sister.
-
In the newspaper article i mentioned it says Sarah was walking across some fields on her way home on a Sunday night and was met by Sellars and Calvert and that Sellars tried to kiss Sarah Garside but she resisted so he threw her down and commited a criminal assault upon her, Calvert who stood by during the time attempted a similar assault .Sellars defence was the girl was consenting party and only brought the present charge because Calvert denied that he interfered futher tha threatning to tell the girl's sister. He was discharged , Sellars was committed for two months.
I have just checked the St Mary's Ecclesfield church baptism's and found
John Garside baptised 19th Nov 1854 mother Sarah Garside single woman workhouse
I assume John Garside is the result of his mother being assaulted and after John Oxley married her he became John Oxley
For John Oxley and Sarah Garside's other children i have
George baptised 1857 died 1857
Polly baptised 1861 died 1861
Walter baptised 1861 aged 3 died 1861
Arthur baptised 1868
Henry baptised 1868
-
The newspaper report about the assault was dated 17 June 1854 and stated that it happened on Sunday night. John Garside was baptised 5 months later ???
-
It's all confusing i have found some more info out i will put it on later tonight

They are the only Sarah Garside's i can find in the census apart from the one born in 1830 who is up in Durham in 1841 .
I found these Garside's in the 1841 census showing no parents
!841 Sheffield Park
Ann Newcombe 67
Joseph Garside 12
Thoms Garside 9
1841 sheffield Attercliffe
John Garside 15 miner
i am wondering if she is not a Garside , perhaps a Garside got her pregnant and she just called herself Garside pretending to be married and he's left her and the baby after she has been asualted and thats why she ended up in the workhouse.
I know it's her in the workhouse because her son John is an Oxley in the 1861 and 1871 census and from 1881 census onwards he uses the surname Garside . John marries Sarah Hartley and his brother Henry Oxley marries Sarah's sister Margaret Hartley
Think i will send for John Garside's birth certificate to see if i can learn anything from it .I really don't think it is the Sarah born Sheffield 1830 to John and Mary unless Mary married again and lived in Ecclesfield i can't understand why she would leave her family in Durham.
-
Henry Garside born 1816 Sheffield married Ann Mettam 1839 Rotherham
That marriage has Henry's father, John, described as a cutler, not a puddler and they are two very different occupations.
-
.I found Sarah Garside born Attercliffe 1830 father a John Garside mother a Mary Booth
On that baptism father, John, is described as a scissorsmith
-
I can't find any Garside's with the occupation puddler they all seem to be file smiths / cutters a lot from Oughtibridge i have had a look at sheffield indexers births.
I did get Ann Garside wrong earlier She didn't marry William Sheldon She married a George Wood
1851 census Sheffield
George Wood head 30 Ecclesfield file maker
Ann Wood Wife 28 Ecclesfield
Elizabeth Garside 19 Sister in law Oughtibridge
1861 census Sheffield Heavy Gate Road
George Wood 40 Ecclesfield File maker
Ann wood wife 38 Ecclesfield
Alice Wood daughter 8 Sheffield
-
In the newspaper report it said Joseph Calvert was going to threaten to tell her sister
-
I can't find any Garside's with the occupation puddler
Neither can I. Most, if not all the south Yorkshire puddlers seem to live in the Rotherham area. I wonder if her father died before any online census returns and her mother remarried, in which case she could be on census pre - marriage under a step father's surname.
-
Thats what i'm thinking , I think i have found the Sarah Garside in Durham in 1851
1851 Census Durham crossgate
Sarah Garish 19 servant Sheffield
living with Ann Dixon and family
There is a John Faries in the Ecclesfield area who is foreman / manager in iron works when his children have been baptized at Ecclesfield his occupation has been moulder he has a Sarah the right age .
If she is in the workhouse pregnant and she has a sister near by perhaps her family have disowned her , where was she walking home to when she was assualted she must live in or near by Ecclesfield.
I have her son Henry's birth certificate and her maiden name is showing Garside.
-
It's that what is really bugging me Joseph Calvert that assualted her and Thomas Garside living together in the 1851 census is he her brother or some relative or perhaps the father to her baby ,i just don't know
-
Got John Garside's birth certificate, still none the wiser just has mother Sarah Garside born October 22nd 1854 at Ecclesfield workhouse
-
might be on to something found a Harriet Garside living in the 1841 census with the greaves family in Ecclesfield.
In 1841 Rotherham a Harriet Garside married a John Greaves
1851 1861 1871 they lived in Ecclesfield they had the following children
Edward b 1845
John b 1847
Mary Ann b 1850
Polly b 1852
walter b 1856
Bertha b 1863
John Greaves that married Harriet works at the iron works
There is a Harriet Garside baptized April 18th 1824 Sheffield Parish Church parents Mary and John a Labourer
Think my next move is to order Harriet and John's marriage certificate
-
Yes found a connection Bertha Greaves married a George Chapman in 1881 and in the 1881 census Bertha and George are living with John and Sarah Oxley so Sarah and Harriet are sisters.
