Hi all
My girlfriend's Grandmother was German, Bavarian to be exact, and came to England in the 40's. I've found tracing her German family on Ancestry incredibly hard. Does anyone know any good resources or tips regarding German genealogy?
Many thanks
Samuel

Ah, thank you! My apologies, hadn't seen there were boards further down the page ...

... and, of course, there's the Anglo-German Family History Society

Any particular area in Bavaria? I've found much of my great-grandfather's family in the records extracted from local churches here-

Gemünden am Main. About 40km from Wurzburg. :)

Hi Samuel
For birth, marriage and death records less than 100 or 120 years ago you have to ask at the civil registry office of Gemünden or maybe at the archive of the town if there exists such an archive.
For birth, marriage and death records further back in time its important to know to which religion they belonged to. The catholic churchbooks of Gemünden should be at the Diözesanarchiv Würzburg but their records are not online. I don't know where the lutheran churchbooks are held or if they are already online on archion or ancestry. If they were jewish there are other research possibilities.
