Title: Local History Day Event At North Shields Library 12th May
Post by: River Tyne Lass on Wednesday 11 April 18 09:12 BST (UK)
The North Shields are holding their annual Local History Day Event in 12th May.

See the attachment.  This is a fantastic event and well worth going to and it is FREE! :)

I will let you know more information as I find out.  I already know that the North East War Memorials Project people will have a stall and so you may be able to receive war information on local ancestors or you may wish to share information.

I have covered up the email address with a leaflet in the photo as I know we are not allowed to post these on here.  However, you obtain this from their website.

Thank you RTL for posting this. Definitely one not to miss with all the sea-faring, Excise and ship-building men hanging off my tree!

Where is the best place to park for this event? I remember the little car park down the next road gets full even mid-week, never mind on a Saturday.

Hi Gen,

I know there is a small ASDA quite close to the library.  Over the road from this is a high rise parking place.  I think this will be pay and display.  I will ask librarians today though and see what places they might suggest.

Hi Jen,

Thanks for the link.  I didn't know about this link.  This is very helpful in letting us all know what will be on. :)

Hi Gen,

Librarians think car park on Norfolk Street is free on a Saturday but are not sure.  They also think the bottom of Stephenson Street furthest away from the library is free.  Another one says there is a pay car back at the back of BM. :)

Thanks RTL

I've parked at the Norfolk Street one before, it was pretty full on a Wednesday but at least there are a couple more. Whats a BM?

My local newspaper called the 'News Guardian' has an article asking for help to solve a mystery.

There will be a portrait of an unknown man by the 'tragic North Tyneside' artist Victor Noble Rainbird displayed during the Local History Day event.  Help is being sought as to the identity of the man in the painting.

Below are links giving some information on Rainbird.

https://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/news/north-east-news/tragic-north-shields-artist-remembered-9793949

There is an email in my local paper to send info on to but I can't post on main board.

Could any of you who are going to this event have a look and let the librarians at the local studies know if you can provide information?  There is a photo of the unknown man in the paper but I can't photocopy this obviously for copyright reasons.

I am going to the event but unfortunately do not know anything about this mystery man in the portrait.

Apparently, there is to be a play inspired by the life of this artist.

Thank you.

Hi All,

If any of you do go to the history day tomorrow please be sure to say hello, I'm running a combined stall for Tynemouth Scouts and the Royal British Legion.

See you there,

Michael

Will do, Michael!  Looking forward to meeting you there! :)

This event is being held on the second floor but there is a large lift for people with mobility difficulties.

I would recommend visitors checking the biographies folders for local ancestors when they come.  Also, if you have information to add in the folders I am sure this will be most appreciated. :)

Well, there is quite a throng here at the library ...

It has been lovely to have met you Michael and to see your very interesting stall and hear about your future research work.  I believe this will be of benefit to many in the future when this gets off the ground - your work and commitments permitting.

It has been lovely to meet and catch up with other researchers too and the stalls are most interesting. :)
