Can anyone help with the location of this marriage plase. So far I have that it was in a cafe in Greenock!
Thanks

That's really difficult. I think I would contact SP and ask them for a better image. They are very good about such things.

But, was it usual for marriages ro be carried out in a cafe?
-
It wasn't unusual - I've seen registrations in hotels and in one of the couple's houses, etc

In Scotland until well into the 20th Century it was unusual to have a wedding ceremony in a Presbyterian Church.
Marriage ceremonies were most often conducted in the Brides home or even the ministers home but later as wedding groups got bigger commercial premises cafes, restaurants, hotels etc began to be used.
In Scotland also the different places did not need licenses to have marriages on their premises as it was the minister who was authorised to carry out the wedding ceremony.

Aye, Marriage is not a sacrament in the Kirk only Baptism & Communion!

How interesting, I did not know that about Scottish marriage.
Could this be why I can't find some of my ancestors marriages in the OPRs? In some cases their baptisms and their kids' baptisms are in the same church OPR but their marriage isn't ???
Cheers, Marlene

The short answer is ..... not really ::)
In theory the Parish Minister for the local Church of Scotland Church was supposed to record all Births Marriages and Deaths in their area regardless of the Church or Religion involved. Some did but many did not - in addition to this the records were poorly maintained & stored resulting in the loss of quite a bit of our local history. Another complication was the splintering of the Church as the congregations often took their records with them and in quite a few cases severed all communication with the local Church of Scotland.
Add to this mix the Scots Law tradition of recognising other forms of marriage (ie what became known as "irregular marriages" )- the Church was unhappy with the idea of these marriages but tacitly allowed them to go on rather than risk losing a large number of their congregations.
