Title: Looking for service number/ records
Post by: TJ2810 on Wednesday 11 April 18 16:23 BST (UK)
It’s a long shot but wondering if any one can help. My family are trying to trace more on the military history of my late Grandad. His name is Bernard Mountain (born 1931, died 2011) Sadly we do not know much more than he was in the RAF. We think around 1949-1951. He was definitely based on land and always said just “a train ride away”. He lived in Rastrick/Brighouse, west yorkshire. If anyone can help that would be great!!!

Welcome to rootschat

His service records will still be with the MOD, you do not need a service number to order them. There is a charge of £30 unless his wife is still living in which case she can apply for them free of charge

Yes you can apply without the service number.  I believe it asks for Date of birth or service number.  You will need his death certificate

I confirm you can apply without a service number, the form actually says
'must supply a service number and/or a date of birth' (my bold emphasis) so it's either both or just a DOB.

There are three Bernard Mountain listed in AIR 78

Bernard 24?2576 ?= 4 or 7  I favour 4
Bernard Charles 4077934
Bernard Rex 3116420

This link (http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C15625351) will take you to the relevant files if you want to see for yourself, you need image 21. You can see the images on screen ( click on 'Show Images') or you can download the PDF file free of charge (click on add to Basket)

That’s no problem. My mum is going to apply as she was next of kin. Thanks again
