Title: Burial 1988 London, Ontario, possible British Home Child?
Post by: Nova67 on Friday 13 April 18 02:18 BST (UK)
I am wondering if it is possible that there is an obituary or death notice for a Worthy Lane who was buried at Mount Pleasant Cemetery, London, Middlesex, Ontario. Dates given for him are 1909 - 1988. There is no other information other than name and dates on this index.

I am still assuming this is the same Worthy Lane who was sent to Canada with the Fegan's Homes in 1923 via the Mountcalm vessel.

The Worthy Lane I am interested in birth was registered in 1905 in Bedwellty, Monmouthshire, Wales. Born to Mark Lane and Rachel Silverthorne (aka Thorne). He was orphaned by 1910 with both parents deaths registered that year. He, and some of his siblings, are at the Muller's Orphan Houses, Ashley Down, Bristol, Gloucestershire, England in 1911, per census.

I have found him on the shipping registers leaving from Liverpool and bound for Toronto in 1923. Also found upon arrival. Age was 17 1/2.

There is a Worthy "Llane" on the Canada Voter's List for 1935 at Parkdale, Ontario, Canada working as a Clerk. Ancestry has it indexed as Worthy "Uane". Despite the discrepancy with the birth date, I am assuming the burial is for the same man.

This is the first Home Child I have encountered, although I am very concerned about their plight. I know of the terrible experiences here in Australia.  My father emigrated from Europe in 1959, we have since discovered there were British Home Children on his ship, upon reading a book written by David Hill, who was one of those children.

I also do not know if Worthy married?

I  contacted Mt Pleasant and the info that they have is as follows.  Date of death 24 Dec 1988. Date of burial was 30 Dec 1988. They did not have a date of birth but he was shown as 84 years of age so 1904/05.

Brilliant Ed. Thank you so much for the local knowledge. I felt it must be him because of the unusual name and being in the same province as Toronto where he was sent.
I guess there is no way of knowing if he was married?

You could try contacting the London Public Library and see if they would be willing to do an obit lookup

Thanks Ed. I shall try that. There doesn't appear to be a wife with him on the voter list.

Hi,

There have been a couple of posts here on RC for quick lookups (as yours is, as you know date of death) for obits from the London Public Library and their response has been outstanding. I can't remember which post, but they replied to one within the hour free of charge :o

Here's the link. Click on "ask a question"

I just received the death notice. No information on family or background.  Not an obituary as such. Died in a Veteran’s Hospital, so he would have served in the military I assume to be a patient there?

After midnight here.

Hi,

Oh good, LPL outstanding......not so good that there wasn't much information.

It seems Worthy maintained a low profile. There is that one possible on the 1935 Voters List in
Parkdale.

There are Toronto directories which include Parkdale, but I couldn't spot him.

There are London directories but not for that time frame.

Yes, I do not think you would get that promptness here in Australia! Thank you LPL!!!
The death notice is very perfunctory, so I imagine there is no family.
There is no way of finding out if he served in WW2 - which I am assuming he did now. Are the soldiers indexed anywhere? I did look at your national archives.
Yes, I previously found Worthy LLane in 1935 - they seem to have Welshified his name!
Have also discovered one of his sister's who was in the same orphanage  emigrated to South Africa with her family.

Yes, I have seen the photo. I am thinking he might be the middle one back row. His name appears down the bottom of the photo W Lane (appears to be the fourth last name). Had to enlarge it on my screen.

Canada has very strict privacy laws, so unfortunately WW2 service records etc. would not available.

That is what I assumed. Thank you. I will take a look at the directories link. I guess unless he made the newspapers for some other reason, not much more to go on.
