How would someone in the 1600's know what an elephant looked like ?
We need to know.

There was an African elephant in the Tower of London menagerie, sent by the King of France in 1255.

Love the pair of cherubs. Appropriate doodle subject. Judging by expression on the face of one, it wasn't angelic. Maybe it was offspring of a bad angel.

Can we date the register more accurately?
Taken from: The surprising history of Britain's elephants" by Caroline Grigson. [A zoologist, formerly a curator in the Museums of the Royal College of Surgeons, she is now an honorary professor at the UCL Institute of Archaeology.]
"In 1675 an Indian elephant calf, only five feet high, was brought to England from Bantam in Java by the Company, its recipient Lord Berkeley immediately put it up for auction, it was ‘sold by the candle’ for the immense sum of £2,000. Its new owner made the most of his investment by exhibiting it in pubs in and around London and probably also taking it round the south of England as far as Oxford. Four years later, [1679] Robert Hooke saw another elephant which had been taught to “wave colours, shoot a gun, bend and kneel, carry a castle and a man”, at Bartholomew Fair."

I can see what looks like 657 beside elephants trunk so possibly 1657 if we could see full image.
But another possibility is that the elephant sketch was added later.

Looks to me like 1680 on cherub with nasty expression.
