Title: John Chambers and Mary Easdale
Post by: poppysmum on Saturday 14 April 18 13:57 BST (UK)
Hello,

I am looking for some help and advice please.
This is the first time I have looked at Irish genealogy.  I am Scottish and so I feel like I know what I’m doing with Scottish records but out of my depth with Irish ones!

I have been researching the family history of a friend who was adopted as a baby and know very little about her family apart from her mother and her grandparents names.

The family lived in Shotts in Scotland but all four of her great grandparents were from Ireland.

I’ve got a bit stuck.

This is what I know about one couple.

John Chambers marrried Mary Easdale on July 19th 1861 in Kirkinriola, Antrim (Clough).  I may not have spelled that correctly.

In 1851, according to the 1851 householders index John lived in Ballymoney, Antrim.

Their daughter Annie was born around 1866.

She married John Deans in Illinois in 1890,although they settled in Shotts.

Could anyone help me or show me where to look?

I have three other families to look for so it would be a big help.

Thanks
Caroline

Thanks,

I’ve found out quite a bit about the family already!

I hadn’t realised Annie was Martha Ann, exciting to find them in Scotland.  Not too far from us 🙂

Hope you can follow instructions for finding other names you are looking for!

The District is what is important.

Extracted marriage details for 1861 marriage gives John Chambers as age 23 (born c1838), father William Chambers.
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FGXC-KM3

LDS have the same marriage strangely listed as Clough, Ballymena & Clough, Downpatrick!
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QGV8-LJBL

This John Chambers, son of William, is 16 in 1851 (born c1835)-
Dunbought Townland, Dunaghy County Antrim (1851)
William Chambers, Head, M, 40, Linen Weaver, Londonderry
Ann Chambers, Wife, M, 50, Winds Spools, Londonderry
John Chambers, Son, U, 16, Linen Weaver, County Antrim
Jane Irvin, W, 77, Winds Spools, Londonderry
Joseph Irvin, U, 12, Learning To Weave, Londonderry
http://www.searchforancestors.com/locality/ireland/census1851/dunaghy.html

The 1851 data is a fragment from the 1851 census which survives but the John Chambers that you are looking for could be in a place where records have been lost.

Extracted records for some children of John Chambers & Mary Easdale-
1. Mary (born 1871 Scotland) https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FQSS-75F
2. Margaretta (born 1871 Scotland) https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FQ7Y-T9F
3. Sarah (born 1874 Scotland) https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FQHN-D99
4. Annie (married 1890 Illinois) https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:KFVY-QX9

Remember that if John and Mary died in Scotland, their death certificates should provide their parents names ( if these were known to the informant). This can be helpful, as their Irish marriage only names their fathers.

A death to consider, potentially father of Mary

John Esdale aged 85, died 1880 at Frocess, Dundermot (so near Clogh/Clough). Certificate can be viewed at irishgenealogy site linked in earlier post on this thread.

A John Esdale was also at Frosses townland (Frocess in above death) at time of Tithe Applotment in 1834.

A different John Esdale, but potentially related, was noted in the press as manager of Balnamore Spinning Mill in nearby Ballymoney (at least c 1900, possibly before/beyond):

There is a a John Esdale headstone at Ballymoney Old Churchyard .

Hi
Thanks you two, very interesting!
I’ll be busy looking at these today.

I have already found the mother’s death certificate in Scotland which is helpful.
