Can anyone guide me into establishing which of troop-ships Mangaunui, Limerick or Arawa was used by 7438 Samuel James Beart Foss when leaving on 16 October 1914 for Egypt. Thanks. T.

What regiment was he in?
-
2nd. Bn. Auckland Infantry. The service number I gave may actuallyapply to the Boer War and not WW1.
10/338 may be for WW1. Thank you Josey.

Sometimes newspapers reported regimental movements, though perhaps not in war circumstances.....do you have his service record? Occasionally they mention the ship. Perhaps contact the regimental archivist/museum if there is one?
-
Yes. I have copies of his service records but no help there. Thanks for your suggestion but I think that remote relations who live in NZ are better placed than I so will leave it to them for now. T

Link to Army service record for Samuel J. B. FOSS - in case it's helpful to anyone trying to assist with this query.

Hi Toby,
If you go to New Zealand Resources & Offers you will see a topic called LINKS - Military.

Scroll down until you find New Zealand Troopship Magazines and follow the instructions to find any magazines printed on these vessels. They often listed all the soldiers on board and individuals might make other appearances in the anecdotes that make up the body of such magazines.

Well, I found one that might help, but it isn't digitized.

You might want to contact Auckland Museum Library for more information.
I've had a brief look though the troopship magazines but can't see any for either the Arawa or the Limerick.

Thanks to you all for suggestions made which, I believe, has now enabled me to crack it.
The Auckland Cenotaph Database states "Troopships Arawa or Limmerick."
But a clearer copy of Samuel's Service Record than anything I had yet seen, showed Tsport. 3
leaving NZ 15/8/14 disembarking in Alexandria on 14/10/14 after 50 days
Arawa was No.10, Limerick was No.7 and No. 3 was Maunganui.
The book "Wellington Regiment (NZEF) 1914-19". by Cunningham et al is very helpful.
If there is an error in my reasoning, I shall be pleased to hear. Many thanks, T.

Hi Toby,
Congratulations on finding it.

I have learnt that the Online Auckland Cenotaph is to be altered accordingly and that this is likely to be completed early in May. T
