Title: Ambrose White Navy & Coastguard 1844-1887 help with rank / rating please
Post by: teach3r on Sunday 15 April 18 17:58 BST (UK)
Good afternoon and thank you in advance for any help that may be given.

My ggg grand-uncle was in the Navy and then ultimately the Coast Guard where, according to the newspaper articles I have found, let quite an illustrious life, including lunch with Royalty.

From Ancestry I have downloaded his record and tried to transcribe its contents, however, I have had some difficulty with some elements and would be grateful for the input of other posters.

I have attached the original for reference as well as my transcription.  My main difficulties are shown on my transcription in red.  I have no idea what the first column shows; I am also unsure about some of the rank abbreviations or whether I have transcribed these correctly.

Any help with the items in red would be much appreciated.

Thank you,

Nic

Hi

I'll try and answer your questions. The first column is his number in the ships books and is only to identify a man for accounting purposes for both wages and food. The BZl and B1l is in fact B2Cl and B1Cl, which are Boy 2nd class and Boy 1st Class respectively. A Boy was normally advanced to an Ordinary Seaman on his 18th birthday.

The Revenue Cruiser is not Devout but rather Scout.

1G Bodge and 2nd Bl are the dates of the award of the 1st and 2nd Good Conduct Badges, which were actually stripes worn on the left sleeve. Each earned the man additional pay.

Dispatch, Adder and Repulse were all Revenue Cruiser that acted as Tender to HMS Pembroke.

The notation in red at the end is Whall and is shorthand for Whitehall where his pension would be approved. I think the other notation is 'Civil app' and indicates that he was now no longer elidgible to serve in the Royal Navy.

Hope this helps a little.

Martin

Thank you Martin for your time and help - it has certainly helped to clear a few things up!

Could I pick your brain a little bit more please ....?

I have attached the transcription that has now been updated with your corrections and explanations.  I have left a few 'red' parts that I am still struggling with that I would be grateful for your help with.

Thanks again,

Nic

Nic

The notation is 'Divl' - Divisional Officer and the other note is 'Appointed Divl Officer'. The last one I'm afraid I can't help with.
