Title: Michael Usher - Sunderland
Post by: RPLownds on Sunday 15 April 18 22:11 BST (UK)
I wonder if anyone can help me discover the background to a Michael Usher, born circa 1862. This info I have is that he married a Hannah Mary Lownds 1885, he then appears on the 1891 Census at Old Grey St. Sunderland and in the 1901 Census at Tee St. Sunderland. I am desperate (I dont use that word lightly!) to understand who were Michaels mother & father and their background

What birthplace does he have on census?

From that it should be possible to trace his birth registration to enable you to order his birth certificate and find out his parents.

His marriage certificate should give the name of his father.

Hello,
If you have him on those censuses, do you not have access to earlier ones?
You can search Family Search and the information there shows family names.

There is only one Michael Usher born abt 1862 in Sunderland showing - parents Robert and Margaret.
Free BMD gives a likely marriage in 1852 and GRO confirms that mmn is Carr.

I too wonder this.

A Michael Usher isn’t on the census’ with Foster and we now know he isn’t related to Mary Ann.

All thank you for this information, its excellent. Jamjar/Ratcliff, it is linked to my other post, I was trying to understand whether Michael was related to Foster in any way, as this would mean that my grandparents had the same ancestor!

Could Foster be related to Michaels father, Robert.

I’m confused, where does a Michael Usher come into things.  ???

Here is Foster’s birth:

USHER, FOSTER mmn FOSTER
GRO Reference: 1845  J Quarter in SUNDERLAND UNION  Volume 24  Page 311

On the 1851 as Forster, but no parents showing here. Hopefully, someone can check other sites.

Do you have access to the censuses?
Have you tried searching on Family Search?

As already shown Michael is the son of Robert.

Robert appears in 1841 321/24/43

Robert is 13 yrs with Mary 30yrs and other children, including Mary,  Elizabeth and Ann. No relationships are given in 1841.

1851 2397/185/52

William and Mary Usher with children as above and Forster. Jamar has linked to this entry. FS haven’t shown the full family as they run over two pages but you can look the parents up now.

It would seem, therefore, that Foster is the younger brother of Robert and uncle of Michael. (I think)

This may be nothing to do with your ancestors but there was a Mary Bain who was connected (through an event) with some of my ancestors.  She was the said illegitimate daughter of a Ralph Usher who was in turn the son of a Thomas Usher who had a business in South Shields.  There was a lawsuit regarding Ralph being her father.  There are stories about this in the Shields Daily News dated Tuesday, 26 January 1892; Tuesday 16 February 1892; Wednesday 17 February 1892; Wednesday 9 March 1892; Thursday 12 May 1892.

I only found this out after researching Mary Bain through newspaper stories after learning that she had once helped and shown hospitality to my ancestors.   However, as your Ushers are Sunderland ones there may be no connection.

Jamjar im really sorry, I should have provided some context/back story, my grandparents are a Mary Usher (granddaughter of Foster) and a Mark Lownds. However when I looked into Mark Lownds I discovered his dad was a Mark Usher Lownds, he had been born out of wedlock to a Michael Usher and a Hannah Lownds & it is the mothers maiden name that has passed down as the family name, so in theory my grandparents 'should' be a Mark Usher and a Mary Usher! I am just trying to establish whethere they had any common relations (would be a family bombshell!), im a bit of a novice, but they sites I have been pointed to seem useful, is familysearch expensive?

When you ask re family Search, if you mean the site it is free https://www.familysearch.org

You have to register but it is useful for transcriptions of censuses and some parish records.

This looks to be Mark Usher Lownds transcribed as Mark W but the original looks to be ‘U’. Is that him born 1883?

Hi Heywood, yes that is him with his Grandmother, the mother of Hannah Lownds. His dad was a Michael Usher, son of Robert. It certainly appears that Robert is the older brother to Foster.

Thanks Heywood, yes Mary was the middle name of Hannah, she was Hannah Mary Lownds, in future Census she appears with Michael as Hannah. She also uses the name Mary on the birth certificate for Mark Usher Lownds.
