Title: Need help with initials.
Post by: tazzie on Tuesday 17 April 18 15:22 BST (UK)
Hi on one of our little projects on local war memorials I have an entry I need help with please.
I have Tom Coles his unit is listed as LKA. His brother George was in OBLI and a notation states his name is on LKA roll of honour.
What does LKA  stand for. Both are from Bletchley/ Fenny Stratford Buckinghamshire.

Thank you.

Tazzie.

I think the initials are going to refer to a local company as opposed to a regiment and that the entry for being his unit is wrong.
It is strange as his brother's are also on the roll of honour. I may have to try trade directories.
The details are on the website Buckinghamshire remembers. He is actually Thomas James William Coles in the Somerset reg. Definitely thinking this is a local thing now.

A George Coles, mother Annie, served in the Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry (although OBLI is not the proper military abbreviation)!

That said I can't find either on the Buckinghamshire Remembers?

The first thing that came to my mind was Lord Kitcheners Army -  but I don't know anything about it, hopefully Max will put me right  ;D

Hi. Yes Lord Kitcheners Army was our stab but I don't know.
Archie Edgar Coles has it listed details come up when you click on his name also Allan Coles.

I am working on those who served from Simpson Village now enveloped by Milton Keynes. Bletchley and Fenny Stratford border the area. My son did our local village a couple of years ago and won a place to travel to the Battle fields in France and Belgium. It's now grown like topsy and we are up to about 10 local villages. It is fascinating and very poignant as many were my sons age now 18.

Good thought Rosie.  It is clearly a local usage in that the "New Army" known as "Kitchener's Army" consisted of the volunteer force raised in 1914 to add to the regular army already in existence and the battalions in the regiments raised were structured in a number of "K" groups.  I find the term associated with Rolls of Honour and Memorials but not in the sense that one can go straight to one listing.  My feeling is that it was an umbrella title for men who were in any of the "LKA" units, volunteers rather than the post 1916 conscripts.

Allan (or Arthur Edgar) was also Ox and Bucks -  1st/1st which was an "LKA" battalion.

What happened to Thomas??

Hubby has found details for Duke of Cornwall reg. and then Somerset Light Infantry.

I double check Clints listings as they sometimes overlap.
I've also gone through his listing for all of the Simpson boys and another one is Charles Bowes also listed by him as LKA.
The newspaper that mentions this is quoted as North Bucks Times & County Observer.

He survived the war.

Got to go football training now. Be back soon.

Hi max.

Clint Lawson is a person who is also studying the Buckinghamshire war memorials and the names they contain.

On www.buckinghamshireremembers.org.UK
He has a section Clints list/ roll of honour.
His data is easily searched and LKA shows for a crew of the boys.
I am not taking the info for granted and have had a couple of anomalies along the way.
Our parish church has a hard copy of one memorial. A few discs have been passed to another villages " historian" who collects loads of wonderful old photos and letters. He was fantastic and knew some of the people whose stories we compiled.

Hi Max.

Yes many thanks for the help. I'm ticking the boys off slowly.
