Title: Forges
Post by: Kerrill on Tuesday 17 April 18 17:18 BST (UK)
Can anyone tell me if there is such thing as Irish records on Forges, I have been looking for any info at all on Hogan's Forge close to New Inn which is near woodlawn in County Galway.

The Forge was in the townland of Clooncagh from what I have found out from the people of the area, was hoping to find something in old newspapers if someone could help who has a account in that area as there is nothing at all in the census records.

Is this the one you mean?

Are you looking for a Hogan who was a blacksmith there?
If so, when?

Thanks very much for the reply, on the census Patrick Hogan comes up as a carpenter, but having been told years ago from the people who lived in the area they were adamant that the Hogan's owned a Forge, I was even showed where it once stood but I have never seen anything in print. The year would have been between 1880 and 1912. And yes that's the place.

I was just about to post that there was a family of Carpenters there.
Maybe the workshop was known as a forge.

..........on the census Patrick Hogan comes up as a carpenter.......

Presumably you mean the 1911 census for Clooncah. Patrick a carpenter.

Might be worth checking birth certificates for all the children to see father's occupation. Also Patrick's marriage to see both his and his father's occupations.

Thanks for all replies, he was down on the census as a carpenter and so was his dad. So I think heywood is right.

If you check 1911 census, Patrick is the only householder with a workshop.
