Title: Stuck in a rut with Lancashire Gradwells! (mid 1700s)
Post by: JennyMarieGradwell on Wednesday 18 April 18 12:46 BST (UK)
Hi All,

I'm in a bit of a rut with one of my tree branches and wondered if anyone could offer any advice.

So far I'm using a standard Ancestry paid membership, and the lan-opc.org.uk website.

I'm tracing my Lancashire Gradwell line. The furthest -reliable- ancestor is James Gradwell, b~1777.

James Gradwell m. Mary (Kershaw) 3 June 1795, Manchester, St Mary, St Denys and St George.

James Gradwell was buried in February 1847 aged 70. The likely baptism record seems to be:

Baptism: 12 Oct 1777 St Peter, Blackley, Lancashire, England
James Gredwell - Son of William Gredwell
    Abode: Moston
    Occupation: Weaver

I come a bit unstuck at William Gredwell, though. Previously I thought that James' parents were:

Marriage: 1 Dec 1782 Collegiate, Manchester, Lancashire, England
William Gradwell - Silk Weaver, this Parish & Town of Manchr
Phebe Butterworth - (X), Widow, Manchr Aforesaid
    Register: Marriages 1782, Page 119, Entry 511

But that seems unlikely with James' birth year as 1777.....?

I wondered if anyone had any ideas about where to turn next? Might William be further afield do you think, prior to James' birth in 1777? (Not sure if this was likely in mid/late 1700s!)

Thanks in advance!

ETA - I have just discovered a previous thread with possible answers so consulting that now, apologies for any repetition here, a lot has happened since I last picked up the family tree!

Some records from lan-opc that I'm looking at currently are below, but any advice/sanity-checking much appreciated at this stage!

Figuring out William Gredwell's marriage info would be brilliant.

Thank you!

I wonder if this is the birth of father William Gradwell (and a sibling of his).

In this parish, there is a distinct gap in years between the two baptisms below, and then the children of William (Richard and James).

Baptism: 28 Nov 1733 St Peter, Blackley, Lancashire, England

Thank you for this, I appreciate it.

I'm not sure why the marriage didn't come up in my searches but it seems very likely to be my 6th great grandfather and grandmother, thanks again.

I'm searching wills and probate on Ancestry but I can't seem to find the will you mentioned. Are you able to point me to the right resource/search engine?

Once again thank you for your help with this!

Good Morning
Yes,sorry I should have been clearer. It's at Lancashire Archives.
lccsecure.lancashire.gov.uk/corporate/questionnaires/runQuestionnaire.asp?qid=576248
It'll cost you £10.
The reference is 1432/48 Mathew Gradwell 14 Jan 1785 weaver Dean Bridge Moston Manchester.
Archdeaconary of Chester.
Of course it may not be your man .I don't know Manchester too well but how many Mathew Gradwell weaver's are there likely to be?

The will of Matthew Gradwell 1785 is available yo download on Find My Past, perhaps your local library has a subscription yo the site.

You need to go to births, marriages and deaths
Then wills
Then put in the record set Cheshire Wills
Then search for Matthew Gradwell
There are some other Gradwells mentioned who could be connected.

Before paying out see if it's available free on Family Search with the Lancs Wills on there. See the link below about Lancs Wills:-

Thank you all for the help!

I tried finding the record by searching the Lancashire Wills & Probate 1457-1858 on FindMyPast. I have a starter subscription (UK records) but when I click to view, it asks me to upgrade, so I'm putting that to one side at the moment.

I also searched on https://user.xmission.com/~nelsonb/lws.htm - I found the record of the will but couldn't spot it in the indexes (https://user.xmission.com/~nelsonb/lwsh.htm#bottom) [Edit- found it in Infra!]

Finally I searched through all the Gs for 1785 on FamilySearch.org (https://www.familysearch.org/search/film/004425779?cat=126866) but also couldn't spot it (this was a LONG search!) I wonder, might Infra wills be separate somehow?

If I am going wrong in any of these places I would appreciate a nudge in the right direction.

Thank you :)
