Title: William Ellwood c1700. Dinton, Bucks.
Post by: bucksboy on Wednesday 18 April 18 13:33 BST (UK)
William Ellwood dies in Wendover, but is buried in Dinton, 22 Feb 1852.  'Gent of Wendover Dean'. (no age given at burial).

He married Ann Hitchcock in 1727 in Dinton. (William Ellwood otp of Wendover, Ann Hitchcock otp.)

Is there a baptism to be found in Dinton please.  Not found in Wendover.

Thanks.

Steve. :)

EDIT: The only death that makes sense, is one in Sculcoates. 1852. aged 71.  So a birth year of 1781.  But why Sculcoates.??

If he died Sculcoates 1852 he cannot have been born c1700 unless he's in the Guinness Book of Records!

I can't find a birth or a death, all I can find is the 1727 marriage.

Something is really wrong here.  This man is very elusive.

There is a possible sighting in a Criminal record in 1803, age is 24, a Baker.  Aquitted.  Birth Location, Buckinghamshire. Trial held in Middlesex.

There is also a possible sighting in Penrith Jail, in 1841. b.1781, n.b.i.c. as an Inmate.

His Will says, 'of Wendover Dean', and mentions his children, but not his wife.  Perhaps I need to find her death or burial.

I'm not sure where to go next, as this man cannot be found without any certainty, with what I already have.  ???

Gent is one thing, the reality could be another.

Frances 1730

I am as daft as a bag of frogs. ::) :-[

Wrong Will,  and I misread the year by 100 years.   1752 not 1852.

He was bit old to have died in 1852.. ;D

I think this thread is a bit of pup.  Sorry about that.  I'll come back later, when I'm had a lay down. ;D

I can't see a baptism in Dinton.

Any idea from the will if this was his first marriage? Could he have been baptised as early as 8 June 1684 in nearby Chesham, son of Thomas & Martha? There appears to be a few Ellwoods being baptised there around that time.

If he died in 1752, this would still only have made him c 68 years old.

There's a baptism in Chesham for a Thomas Ellwood s/o William & Frances 28 Jan 1714. However, the only possible marriage I can find for these two is way up there in Carlisle in 1713!! Statistically possible as a first marriage, but is it likely? What did this man do for a living? Anything that would make him travel a lot - perhaps I'm just having one of my flights of fancy!!

Thanks Jill. :)

I think I need to get some earlier and later Pr's for the Ellwoods. Tried to do it on the cheap, and be smart, but I think that idea failed.  I'll have to bite the bullet, and get the others. ::) :)

Well........got the earlier PR's, and they were no help at all. Except for a possible baptism in 1694 in Chesham, to Thomas & Martha Ellwood(nee.Lane).  No burial found for his wife Ann.

Although the PR's are in BucksFHS databases, there are some that aren't double checked, prior to being published.  So, at the moment, the Chesham baptism seems the most likely.

The Ellwoods, do not seem to settle in any one place.......nor grouped in any single Parish.  No Ellwood 'powerbase', so to speak.  They seem to have children baptised in one place, and get married in another, then get buried elsewhere.

Will o' the Wisps, the lot of them. :o ;D
