Title: CdV of woman for dating please
Post by: JenB on Friday 20 April 18 10:11 BST (UK)
This is another photo by Allan Ramsden who roamed the north of England and southern Scotland with his 'photographic saloon' (i.e. caravan) for some 40 years during the summer months, from mid-1860 onwards.

Please can someone give me a date on this rather nice 'outdoor' picture?

Charming isn't it.
The long square bodice is a late 1870's-early 1880's style.
I would suggest this is early-mid 1880's.

That's great Jim thanks very much. It's a lovely photo.

I'm trying to work out what she's holding in her left hand  :-\

Looks like gloves to me. Maybe there's a more fixed handle shape above - but no bag  ???

Add - I see a small pouch type bag now  :)

Ah, I see what you mean.
Perhaps something approximately this sort of shape  :-\ https://www.pinterest.co.uk/pin/134615476338883987/

Yes- I think it might have been called an evening bag at one time  ;D

Is there a half circle of woof or bone as a handle just above her wrist  - can't quite make it out?

Added - handle more like this one:

If you look back at the original picture rather than the enlargement it looks far more like gloves. The thing around her wrist is the same on both arms, ie part of her dress.

I didn't explain properly - It's what she's holding rather than the wristband itself that has the arc that looks like a handle.

I thought it was gloves too.

I thought it was gloves at first but then Jennifer put up the large snip and I noticed the very circular piece that didn't look like a glove and a possible bag below.

My husband said he thought it might be gloves, but to be honest I'm struggling to see that. I see a horseshoe shaped object  :-\

Looking at it on my large monitor now, Jennifer. It's not a bag as the bottom is really part of the jacket/top, but it does look horseshoe shaped- certainly a distinct curve.   Isn't it unlucky to hold one that way though  :-\

I had another go at a scan, but I'm not sure it's any better  :-\

You mean a sort of Victorian 'alice band'  :-\

Yes, that's it, they do appear in some Victorian photos. Your lady is certainly holding something horseshoe-shaped, it's not gloves or a purse.
