Title: Glencree reformatory records & Dublin ships crew records
Post by: lolaclare on Monday 23 April 18 13:19 BST (UK)
I think I have found my great great grandfather William Fleming in court in Dublin in 1868 as a 13 year old and being sent off to Glencree Reformatory for 5 years. He had a tattoo on his left hand of an 'F' according to the document I've seen and committed the crime with two other boys who all three were orphans and living at various addresses in Loftus Lane.

Does anybody know if there are any records I can access from Glencree regarding his time there 1868-73?

And also, any ideas why would three orphans all under 15 be living at 5, 9 and 3 Loftus Lane? What was there in the 1860s?

I think he would have gone on to join the merchant navy after leaving Glencree - or at least hopped on a ship to Liverpool - as he was there and getting married by 1878 and listed his occupation as 'mariner'. What records are there between 1873 and 1878 regarding ships crews going between Dublin and Liverpool?

Thanks in advance!
