Title: Margaret Maria LeGeyt, wife of Morton Shaw. Did she die in 1847 in Cheshire?
Post by: rkive82 on Monday 23 April 18 19:19 BST (UK)
Margaret Maria LeGeyt was born in 1812 in Wingham, Kent. She was the daughter of Philip LeGeyt and Jane Cairnes.

Margaret first married Percy Drummond in 1837. Percy Drummond died about 1842 and Margaret then married Rev. Morton Shaw in 1846 in Brighton.

Morton Shaw was said to be "of Arley Chapel, Cheshire." Family records state that Margaret died "about 1846." I have found two death records for Margaret Maria Shaw in Q March 1847; one is in Runcorn and one in Altrincham.

My best guess would be that Margaret died while giving birth to a daughter given the same name.

Can somebody shed some light on this please?
Thanks

Not a lot of help, as according to the GRO site both Margaret Marias were 34 when they died!

Thanks. Well at least that fits in with a birth year of 1812.

I have seen two death registrations for the same person in my family, so they could both be her. A newspaper article or similar would be the most helpful (apart from purchasing both certs of course).

They are about 20 miles apart though and I would think a double registration is unusual, I've never come across it. Also if she was married to a vicar, you'd expect him to know what he was doing.  ;D

That's a load of Bull! (I'm referring to the death notice). Sorry. I couldn't resist.
 ;D
Thanks very much. That's exactly what I was seeking. So poor Margaret would have died on 27th December 1846.
Since they married in July 1846 and he was a man of the cloth, I'm assuming  ::) that Margaret didn't die in childbirth ... but one never knows.

In response to Groom, two ladies with the same name and age would be a remarkable coincidence. Perhaps time will tell.  ???
Thanks

One Margaret Maria Shaw was buried at Great Budworth 31 Dec 1846 - so perfectly plausible the registration was Q1 1847. 34y old - abode Aston. The latter doesn't say much in Cheshire as we have several! Burial by Wm Whitworth, curate.

Altrincham Reg District includes Aston by Budworth.

Runcorn Reg District includes Great Budworth, Aston by Sutton and Aston Grange!!

CheshireBMD has this:
Cheshire Death indexes for the years: 1846
Surname   Forename(s)   Age or Date of Birth   Sub-District   Registers At   Reference
SHAW   Margaret M   -   Budworth   Warrington      BUD/2/247
SHAW   Margaret M   -   Lymm   Warrington      LYMM/3/162

(OK - I never expected that - it appears that CheshireBMD indexes under year of death, FreeBMD under year of regstration! )

The above places are sub-districts - so sub-district Budworth is the Runcorn Reg District one and sub-district Lymm is the Altrincham Reg District one.

According to Wikipedia, "Arley is a small village in the civil parish of Aston by Budworth, Cheshire" - which is in Altrincham Reg District. Not what I was expecting from the burial location... Am I missing something?

They didn't have a very long marriage did they?

You could order both certificates online from the GRO at £6 each rather than paper ones for £9.25. That way it would only cost you £12 to satisfy your curiosity as to which one was her, or if for some reason she was registered twice. It would also give you the cause of death.

The Kentish Gazette, 5 Jan 1847, also includes " ... after a few hours illness ..."

I may well plonk down my £12 to buy both certificates if we don't solve this.

It's not obvious to me whether they are 2 different people - especially given what I thought I found about the places - though it is possible that I got confused by all the Astons.

While I'm at it, would it be pushing my luck to ask if anybody can find the death info for Margaret's sister Matilda Frances LeGeyt born about 1809 in Ringwould, Kent and also said to have died in 1846.

Matilda married Wm. Jas. Connolly on 26th December 1828 in Canterbury.

Her will is on Ancestry. I haven't read it all but it does say she was the widow of William Conolly. She leaves her money to quite a few people called Conolly.

Thanks very much Groom. I'll take a look at that. I forget to look for wills. Is it among the death related records?

... - Residence Aston by Budworth ...

Except that the parish register on FindMyPast says just Aston, not Aston by Budworth, which is a bit worrying given that there are several places called Aston. Having said that, the likelihood of it not being the woman in the newspaper report is about zero - rather I worry that the CPRDB people have "clarified" that place name with no justification. No issue here but in other circumstances?

Thanks very much for your help everybody.
I am satisfied that we've found the answer to my post about Margaret Maria LeGeyt - and found details about the death of her sister Matilda Frances LeGeyt.

Indeed - but let us know if you solve the mystery of which is her death certificate - those 2 index entries look so similar!

Here are the two death certificates for Margaret Maria Shaw, wife of Morton Shaw. Yes. They are both for Margaret.
What do you make of them? One for Aston by Budworth and one for Crowley!

Fascinating! And thank you for ordering the pair.

I reckon that part of the confusion has arisen because Aston by Budworth is very close to the edge of the Altrincham Reg District, where it butts onto the Runcorn District. So nobody's been quite sure who should be reporting to who...

Joseph Donald was actually present at the death - he lives at Aston by Budworth, where the death is supposed to be, and he's gone to Samuel Carter, the registrar of deaths(?) for the Lymm sub-district of the Altrincham district. Notice that there's no certification here.

Thomas Gough of Budworth was "in attendance" on her and he's gone to Peter Edgeley, registrar of deaths(?) for the Budworth sub-district of the Runcorn district. This one is certified so I wonder if Thomas Gough knew the doctor? (The village of Great Budworth actually is over the border of the district and so is in Runcorn RD. He's told the registrar that the death was at Crowley, a township in Great Budworth parish in Runcorn RD).

Joseph Donald has gone quite a bit later on 11 January 1847 while Thomas Gough went on 4 January. Given that the death occurred on 27 Dec 1846, I would take a guess that Joseph Donald wasn't doing anything about it until something came up in conversation and someone told him that he should talk to the registrar - or the registrar heard of it and went to him. Never quite sure about how it's likely to happen. Since the 2 registrars are different, neither would realise that the other was also working on the case. We'll never know the exact circumstances but "muddle" seems a good word!

NB - my 1857 Directory has a Thomas Gough in Great Budworth as a boot & shoe maker. And Mr Joseph Donald at Aston by Budworth, a "private resident" at Birchbrook House. Which is kind of the opposite way round to what I guessed!

Thanks Adrian.
If you don't mind, I shall add your detailed interpretation of the facts to my Anc***** tree, as I certainly can't summarise it as well as you.
So this is the second time in my research that I've seen two death certificates registered for the same person.
My original post has been answered in detail. Thanks
Richard

Really? Wow - I'd never seen it before at all. Usually the tricky bit is the opposite - trying to find just one!
