Greetings,
I'm seeking a Henry John Shillinglaw who was born in VIC in 1866.
I cannot find his death in VIC and an online source suggested he may have died in NZ, but gave no details.
'SHILLINGLAW, Henry John - b.1866 Richmond, Melb. - (m.Vic.1885 Elizabeth Smith WILSON) - d. Australia or NZ'
He is not buried with his wife, who died in 1940, in VIC.
I did do a search on NZBDM using surname Shillinglaw and nothing came up.

Hello Jamjar,
Was his wife a widow at her death in 1940?

Only one Shillinglaw death to be found in New Zealand. Andrew Shillinglaw who died in 1905.
Another Shillinglaw New Zealand connection although not helpful to you, is interesting.......

[Where is the New Zealand registration [1912] of this Andrew Shillinglaw I wonder?]

I can’t say if Elizabeth was separated, divorced or widowed.
I also can’t find a BDM reference to what looks like Eric in the notice.

Going off at a tangent - but I wonder if this has anything to do with your family - I haven't heard the name Shillinglaw very often so . . . maybe.

I can’t see a connection, but of course it doesn’t mean there isn’t one. ;)
The Shillinglaw’s aren’t my direct line. The sister of my ancestors first wife - my line is from the 2nd wife - married John Shillinglaw. The missing Henry is their son.

Have found a mention of Eric:
SHILLINGLAW ERIC : Service Number - 52193 : Date of birth - 09 Jul 1903 : Place of birth - PRAHRAN VIC : Place of enlistment - MELBOURNE : Next of Kin - SHILLINGLAW R
And cremation, but no birth.

....Henry deserting Elizabeth........
If Henry is wanting to avoid attention you might think that the distinctive family name would need to go.
-
Thanks Wivenhoe.
I don’t have access to Ancestry.
If he deserted her in 1892, then Eric isn’t his.

Added: The birth in 1891 is Reginald.

PROV Register of male prisoners Henry SHILLINGLAW #23256
If this is your Henry.......AKA Charles McKAY......AKA BROWN......
might be names he would use after leaving his family.

The birth year of 1866 is a match.
He and wife must have reunited after his release.

This reporting got world wide coverage, but two local papers had other ideas. One of which reads

Black in his "Surnames of Scotland!" has this as of local origin from the old lands of Shillinglaw in Peebles. William Shillielaw in Birkensyde 1670, John Shillinglaw in Thirleston Mill, Lauder 1683 & William Shillilaw was shot in Tarbolton 1685 in the Killing Times. A John Shillinglaw was the tenant of Birkenside Mill in 1806, so it looks like they were a family of millers.
