Title: Calamitous Firefox Quantum update
Post by: pinot on Thursday 26 April 18 00:41 BST (UK)
Downloaded the above last night and have spent ages since trying to recover my saved logins with passwords, which I rely on considerably. Visits to the Firefox help forums have discovered several people in the same fix, but with no simple solution to the problem. I would love to read other users' moans about this so as not to feel completely isolated, and if any Firefox fan (as I have been for years) has found a solution I would love to hear from them, congratulate them and benefit from their expertise.
Now where did I store my library pin . . .

Not fully related, but I have not been able to use Firefox on my Windows 10 laptop for some time. I have sent several messages, but have received no reply. I might try reinstalling yet again.

I've not had any problems with a Firefox update so far, so I'll look out for the one that seems to have caused you problems.  The only solution I can think of is to do a System restore to the time before the update and then mark Firefox to ask before updates are done.  That way you can refuse to update, although I suppose if it is a security issue that's not great.  The other thing I've done with Word updates, (on the instructions of the HP call centre) is to delete the update itself, the theory being that there'll be another update along sooner or later which will solve any problems with the first update!

Is it your Default Browser

...and

has it got all its Defaults?

Yes it was, Hallmark. Then all of a sudden, after an update if I recall correctly, it stopped working. It kept freezing actually.

OK..  you probably have the Firefox Installer in your downloads

Have you tried just clicking on it and reinstalling FF?

I tried that. I also tried re-downloading it as well. Neither worked. I have since cleaned the computer of unnecessary files, so I might give it another go.

The only other thing I can think of is uninstalling Firefox itself.... then try reinstalling it.

Or deleting both and start from fresh.

Last time I deleted Firefox completely. That's why I have gone through and cleaned the computer. I will have a go tomorrow and report back.

Hallmark - I was offered an update yesterday but declined it for now.  Are you saying the new version is not the one that has caused problems?

I've never had any that caused problems.

There'll be another update along soon, Firefox seems to do almost daily updates these days  ::) We can only hope they'll get it right eventually . . .

Although I like Firefox a lot I am finding it impossible to use it for some web sites lately because it is so 'secure', and have started using Chrome more often. However, I have not (so far) experienced the problems you describe. Do you use 'Firefox Sync' ? That stores your favourites and history somewhere in the 'cloud' so they should be recoverable if you lose them on your system.

59.0.3 is the current latest version of Firefox, mind you this was as a result of the latest Windows 10 April update!
[See my other post for details]

OK, so I've had another notice of the Firefox update to 59.0.3 but I haven't had the latest Windows 10 update yet.  ::)  If Firefox is updating because of the Windows 10 update, what is the point in updating Firefox before Windows 10?

Firefox has nothing to do with Windows....

I know, but Brian (Calverley Lad) said:

which I took to mean that because of a Windows update, Firefox had to change something and as I've not yet had the Windows update, why do I need the Firefox update?

Firefox completed 2 updates this morning!
1) To correct a problem with latest Windows 10 update.
2) A normal system update.

Brian - I've downloaded the Firefox update 59.0.3, I'll think about the Windows update and if I decide to do it then I'll do it during the evening.

Check mike175 comments before you start doing the Windows update, re speed of download against time to finish.

The Windows update has finished downloading, now I've got a message asking me when it's convenient to finish installing.  The time is set for 19.30hrs, so that'll do for me as I'm off the laptop now until tomorrow morning.

Lizzie: Just remember your computer lets you know that reboot required, then even when machine starts normal more updates downloaded to finalize the system!

 Brian

I always try to do a manual restart at a time when I don't need to use the computer because the update can cause a very slow boot up

All updated and working just as before the updates.  Quite a few options from Windows - which to me made me suspect they just want more info from my laptop.  I declined everything they offered.

Glad that I'm not alone in my quandary; noticed that several chatters are on Windows 10, while I'm still on W7, and quite happy with it, even though they've not offered me an update for a few months. One of my main concerns was that my stored logins had ALL disappeared, which gave me a lot of time-wasting creating logins for email accounts, chiefly. To avoid this I would advise any Firefox users considering an upgrade to Firefox QUANTUM to make screen-grabs of their logins or make photos of them. The Firefox help forums have been absolutely no help.
Thanks to all for your interest.

Handiest way is just to do a Backup onto Disk or Stick etc...

Then restore it on new computer or whatever

My husband and I both updated to Windows 10 and neither of us had any problems.  For my stored log-ins, although I copied them I didn't need to.  I store them on Roboform, so I just downloaded their program again and all the log-ins where there.   Similarly with my family tree program.  I downloaded Legacy again and everything was as it should be.  In fact I've now got an up to date version of Legacy, but still have my old version and everything works as it should.

The moral of that experience, being, I suppose: if you don't trust your browser then store your logins somewhere else. Lesson learnt. GRRR!

Problem solved! Serendipitously (which I would never say aloud) I found myself on the Firefox page which invites you to change your master password (for Firefox); thinking I had nothing to lose I typed in my password (which I fortunately remembered) and found the option to cancel the need for a master password which I clicked on and discovered that my stored logins were immediately restored. O happy day! Definitely not an intuitive procedure, but effective.  ;D
