Title: Cold Knuckle near Quarrington

Hi
Have the above place/town/area as birthplace for my Isabella MUSGRAVE in 1855. Have searched many maps etc and unable to find a reference. Isabella's father was a miner - was this the name of a mine perhaps? Have looked at some of the mining history/museum sites without luck. I think it may be an old mine - would that be entered as the place of birth or might there be some houses?

If anyone has some information, possibly direct me to a 1855 map, it would be great, just that it is an interesting name and must be derived from something!

Cold Knuckle quarry is next to Quarrington Hill ;D

Try the National Library of Scotland Maps. An old 25 inch map published 1897 has Cold Knuckles just beside St Paul's Church, Beacon Hill and just to the north of Quarrington Hill. The map suggests it was a row of houses. (Number of quarries in the vicinity of these houses).

The church  is away from the village because there used to be houses called Cold Knuckles along church road. The church was built of stone in 1868.

Thank you all so much for your information.

It seems that the houses at Cold Knuckle (still can't source the reason for the name although it may be obvious?) no longer exist and neither does St Paul's Church (it was built after my Isabella was baptised) as it was demolished in the 1990s. The side-by-side maps are a great resource (thanks Jen B - I couldn't work out how to do it so your link was most appreciated) and now I might try to find a group that do local history for some more information or photos perhaps.

I live in hope!
