Title: "Failure to Maintain"
Post by: dragonlady403 on Saturday 28 April 18 12:51 BST (UK)
As usual with this family - bodies continue to pop up unexpectedly!

Leon Reece Brookes Gould was living in Wgton in 1908.  In July 1908 he sued a company for wages (lost the case I think).  In Aug 1908 a warrant was issued for "Failing to Provide".  In Dec 1908 he turns up in BC Canada.

So the question for me was... who was this child he was supposed to provide for?  We had no idea a child existed by him in NZ.

I can't find any record of a child under his surname and don't know anything more than:

New Zealand Police Gazette - list of Unexecuted Warrants for the Quarter Ended 30 September 1908
Leon Rus (should be Reece) Gould Fails to Provide Date of Issue Aug 31, 1908 Wellington.

My question(s):  1) Would it be possible to obtain further information about this warrant somehow? 2) Would it be possible to try to determine who this child was?

THANKS for any help!!!!!
Regards, Carol

Have you checked out NZ archives as that is where any information/records would be http://archives.govt.nz/resources/research-resources/research-guides/law-and-courts-wellington-html

Hi iluleah, Sorry, but I'm not particularly gifted with Archway and rarely seem to have much luck. I do a lot better with PapersPast which is easier to use.

I did do a search for Leon on Archway but nothing came up. Is that a different resource to the one you have provided?

Hi Carol

Does the "issue of a warrant - 1908" , form part of a newspaper article ???  (Couldn't see it ? )

How do you know the "Failing to Provide" charge relates to a "child"  ?

A maintenance order would have been issued sometime before GOULD was charged with a breach of same .... have you searched back in time for any order made against him ?  [Not all these type of cases made it into the newspapers. ]

... just incidentally Carol, when looking at the Probate documents for the parents of Leon R.B. GOULD (in case they might reveal names of "grandchildren"), I noticed that the NZ death certificates of both parents were appended to the file of Godfrey Reece GOULD.   [Mention this in case it's of interest to you.  ;) ]

[Eliza GOULD died (Intestate) about 6 weeks after her husband in April 1921 - there's a separate file for her. ]

In case it helps ... my experience is that "Failing to maintain" related to an (ex-)wife, and named that female.

Where the same man also had a child he was to 'maintain' the Police Gazette said explicitly "for the maintenance of his child" and named that child.

In the same pages of the Police Gazette were "compelled to maintain his mother" or a child/ren; and an "induced to maintain his children" (but the child was not named).

So maintenance could be for a child, a wife or a mother from these examples.

In your case it is an illegitimate child.  If you go back to that Police Gazette and then to page 382 you will see the full description.

Have now looked at the 1908 Police Gazette listing.

Hi Carol

Can now confirm the correct (NZ) marriage for the mother of Harold Leon ADAMS :

Mabel Beatrice ADAMS - Sidney Frank TRASK -- Year:  1914

A search of electoral rolls also found Harold Leon ADAMS in 1935 sharing an address at Petone, Wellington, with Mabel and Sidney TRASK.

Have some more to come in following post.

WOW - I go out for an evening of food and wine, wake up and you've solved EVERYTHING I could have dreamed of!!!!!!!  That is FANTASTIC.

Frankly, I didn't think I would ever figure out who that child was. I'm quite stunned at your sleuthing capabilities:)

I'll work my way back to the first posts and collect it all.  CAN'T stop smiling. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

???   ... by "he" -- do you mean Mabel's husband, Stanley Frank TRASK.   ???

If you look at the (transcribed) inscription on the of Mabel TRASK's headstone which I posted earlier, you will see that her son was referred to as "Harold" ( though his birth name was Harold Leon.)

Mabel Beatrice ADAMS :

No birth found in New Zealand.

I do suspect though that she may have been the Mabel B. ADAMS - aged 3 months who arrived in Wellington with her parents and a sibling, per the ship "Douglas" in September 1873.

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HT-D43S-9VK?i=10&cc=1609792

ADAMS
- John - 28 years - occupation :  Joiner -- ex Monmouthshire
- Sarah - 20 years
- Mary M. - 2 years
- Mabel B. - 3 months

Still looking into this and some possible NZ-born siblings of Mabel :

Lu - I input all this into my Ancestry and, based on hits from that I would say you are correct re Mabel coming to NZ.  Looks like she was from the Manchester UK area.

wow wow and wow, I never expected to know who my grandfather was. During my whole life no one even talked about the idea of Harold Adams (my father) having a real father. FYI, Harold got married after Evelyn (Terry's mother) died and had 4 more children (plus 4 to them). Amazing what a random google search will do. Thanks for the research :-)

cheers Mark

Hi again Carol ... and welcome to Mark ...

Of course a few years have passed since this thread began ... and it's possible there are new records now available.

Are there "any loose ends" that need tying up, Carol,  ... anything that perhaps wasn't covered, earlier in the search ??     Shout out if need further assistance.    :)

Hey Lu!!! Lovely to connect again.

I wanted to tell you that, thanks to all the wonderful work and assistance provided by this NZ group, I was contacted last year by one of Mabel Adams descendants and I was able to give them a full blown history about a family line they knew nothing at all about --including the very interesting Leon Reece Gould:)

I can't tell you how thrilled I was to be able to offer that historical knowledge to their family... and it was due in very large part to the expertise and support of this amazing Kiwi Board ;D

So thanks again!!!!!!!!

p.s. and yes I am back searching for Lionel Augustus Gould...but I think it is on a different thread, so will find it and update with info I have to date.
