Title: Pls can someone help with Benjamin Moyers c1795
Post by: emjsw on Tuesday 01 May 18 00:16 BST (UK)
I am trying to find about about Isaac Moyer's father Benjamin and wondered if anyone could help please?
I have no idea when he was born and have guessed 1795. I have no idea where he was born, where he died or when he died (he is not on the 1941 census with his family - Whitechapel, Artillery Piece   710, Book   13, Folio 45, Page number 19).  I found Benjamin's son Isaac (born Bethnal Green) on the 1941 census with his mum Catherine. She came from Holland. Her mother or her mother-in-law given that they are both Myers (also from Holland) is called Sarah Myers and is with Catherine on the 1961 census (Whitechapel, Artillery Piece 264, Folio 24
Page number 24. They are Jewish.

Children with Catherine:
Jacob Myers (1826–) Abt. 1826 • Middlesex, England
Aaron Myers (1829–) Abt. 1829 • Middlesex, England
Isaac Moyers (1829–1905) 1829 • Bethnal Green, Middlesex, England
Henry Myers (1835–) Abt. 1835 • Middlesex, England
Julia Myers (1838–1917) Abt. 1838 • Aldgate, London, England
Abraham Myers (1841–) 1841 • London, England
1841 Census • Christ Church Spitalfields, Middlesex, England

The only reason I know Benjamin exists is because of the parish information when Isaac got married in West Bromwich, Staffordshire 1849:
Phonetic spelling - Martin Betsey W Bromwich (18 640) Moyers Isaac W Bromwich (18 640) Married 16 July 1849.Groom 23, a widower and a confectioner. Isaac's father is Benjamin MOYERS a sealing wax maker. Bride Betsey Martin age 19, father Jacob Martin confectioner - Betsey Julia Martin
(1829–1871)

Isaac became a confectioner. I have no idea who his first wife was, and am assuming that Betsey was also Jewish.

So Benjamin did exist but I know nothing else about him and don't know where to start! He was either dead by 1841 or had run off (he is not with Catherine in 1851 or 1861 either). I tried the Great Synagogue in London but they didn't reply (his daughter Julia got married there).

If you have any tips for further searches or are pehaps related and know more I would be really grateful for your help.

Best wishes,
Emma

The Fire in Prince Street,Soho
Morning Chronicle London,September 14th 1821
Wednesday night a coroners inquest was held at the Three Crowns Richmond Street,Soho Square,
on the remains of Benjamin Myers aged 21,who was burnt to death in the conflaguration on Monday morning last,
T.Levey a Jew deposed that he assisted in taking the corpse out of the ruins of Mr Myers house, yesterday morning at 11 o'clock, the gory bits I have left out here,   Abraham Lawrence a Jew deposed that he was convinced that the remains viewed by the jury were part of the body of Abraham Myers junior now the name is switched from Benjamin to Abraham,in this paragraph,I just wonder if there is a connection here to your enquiry

Gosh poor guy, there were not too many Moyers/Myers around at the time so perhaps they were related? Benjamin's children were born between 1826 and 1841 so perhaps they thought it was Benjamin who had perished at first but then it turned out to be Abraham and Benjamin lived on to have a family? Thanks very much for this as this is a lead I was not aware of and it gives another avenue of research for which I am very grateful. Thank you :)

Abraham Myers,Whitechapel Union,, 1/4 1841 Mother Myers

Julia Meyers ,Whitechapel Union,mother Meyers 1838.M 1/4 ,

Thank you, you inspired me to order Abraham's birth certificate which I have done today, hopefully that will confirm Benjamin's existence further and I will know if he was alive or not when Abraham was born (birth 1841 and disappearance 1841). I know from Isaac's wedding record that Benjamin was a sealing wax maker so I will investigate businesses in Whitechapel at the time.
Best wishes,
Em

Thank you, I will try out the different spellings and check the tax records, many thanks for the tip, the more avenues I have of searching (that I didn't know about before) the more likely I am to find him. Thanks again :)

Hi there,

I have ordered some marriage certificates and birth certificates which I will try and post the images of following this post but to summarise I have found the following and now things are even more confusing!!!

Catherine Myers - born in Holland abt 1804 (mother)
Her mother Sarah Myers - born in Holland 1768-1861 (grandmother)

Jacob Myers (1826–) Abt. 1826 • Middlesex, England
Father ??

Aaron Myers (1829–) Abt. 1829 • Middlesex, England
Father ??

Isaac Moyers (1829–1905) 1829 • Bethnal Green, Middlesex, England
Father ??. Marriage 1846 July 1846 • Birmingham, Warwickshire  to Rebecca Coster, Fanny Davies, Sarah Levy or Emma Samuel (I don't have this certificate yet).
Father Benjamin Myers sealing wax maker. 16 Jul 1849 • West Bromwich, Staffordshire, England to Betsy Martin (evidence marriage cert). Isaac is a widow.
Father Isaac Myers sealing wax maker. 10 Mar 1872 • Walsall, Staffordshire, England to Sarah Theaker nee Ryley (evidence marriage cert) Isaac is a widow.

Henry Myers (1835–) Abt. 1835 • Middlesex, England
Father Henry Myers - evidence Poor Law removal and settlement 1862 Bethnal Green Reference Number   London Metropolitan Archives BEBG/267/020 - Frying Pan Alley (the family home in census records) Catherine and son Henry. Widow of Henry Myers married 30 years ago in Amsterdam

Julia Myers (1838–1917) Abt. 1838 • Aldgate, London, England
Father - Jacob Myers on birth certificate and Benjamin Myers on Marriage certificate to Henry Barnett 18 August 1861. Great Synagogue, Duke St, London

Abraham Myers (1841–) 1841 • London, England
1841 Census • Christ Church Spitalfields, Middlesex, England
Father -  Jacob Myers on birth certificate and Benjamin Myers on Freedom of the city documents

So for all of the children there is a father theme of Jacob, Benjamin and Henry. On all of Catherine's census returns there are no husbands.

As her surname is Myers and so is her mother's I wonder if she never married and her children are illegitimate but then I have been told this would have been uncommon in the Jewish community.

I am at a complete loss now!! If anyone has any suggestions about what might be going on (to give a bit of background Catherine was a fruit seller/dealer in Whitechapel/Bethnal Green and Spitalfields over time) I would be so grateful.

Best wishes,
Emma
