My Great Grandmother was Catherine Massey nee MacTaggart b.1856 in Singapore d.1943 in Eastbourne, Sussex. Her father was William b.1829 in Montrose d. 1891 in Lewisham. Her mother was Mary Ann Armstrong m. 17 Jun 1854 in Singapore and who I believe probably died in childbirth to Catherine. I am interested in any record of her or of the Mactaggart family prior to these dates. I know quite a lot about Catherine's half brothers and sisters by Elizabeth Lyall. I was kindly helped a few years ago by someone on the forum, unfortunately I then lost both my father and my wife within a month and so couldn't face family history..... until now! Life is good again, the pain has faded and I have a wonderful new lady in my life, so onward and ever upward! :-)

From the record of marriage at Familysearch 17th June 1854 Singapore , Mary Ann Armstrong is 18 years old and her father is John Armstrong.
William Mactaggart's father is James Mactaggart.
Catherine Mactaggart born 9th Aug. 1855 , baptised 4th Oct. 1855 Singapore.
Think William Mactaggart marries Elizabeth Campbell Lyall 4th June 1857 Maryton by Montrose Angus.

Wow! Thank you, that is fantastic! She obviously did pass away in childbirth with Catherine. What a tragedy. Thank you for confirming this. How did you find the information?

Wow! Thank you Rosie! :D It is amazing how much more information there is out there now I'm back. I would never have thought to look for her on fmg.com because she was in Singapore and fmg was in its infancy when my dear wife died. What a surprise to see the image of her and her father's marker too! x

THANK YOU SO MUCH for helping me everyone. My Scots side has been baffling me for ages. The Mactaggarts in particular. I am sure that somewhere a painting of one of the "seniors" must exist somewhere, they were so big in Singapore, they had streets and buildings named after them! I did manage to track down photographs and info about Catherine's half brothers Francis D. and James G. and a fair bit of other info in the Singapore press archives. My other challenge (along with a cousin) is to try and push our Massey (Massie) line back beyond Andrew a shoemaker in Banff b.1672 in Aberdeen. This one hit a brick wall that neither of us were able to solve. So I will be asking for help there (in the appropriate place) later! ;-)

Just to add that you can see some of the actual images for Singapore bmds in the British India Collection on FindMyPast. The death record for Mary Mactaggart includes her cause of death - I think it says ulceration of the bowel (not completely sure of the first word).
There are also images for the baptism of Catherine Mactaggart and her half sisters Alice and Elizabeth - Elizabeth's burial record is also there. She died in infancy her cause of death being recorded as "visitation by god".
You might also find it useful to look at the Families in British India Society (FBIS) website.

Hello William, thank you for your advice. I am an Ancestry member already and joined FindMyPast yesterday for access to BNL with extras! There seem to be a lot more sources out there but it would cost a fortune to join them all! A five year absence from researching my roots has left me lagging behind so any new pointers are very welcome!
