Title: 1891 scottish census - HAY
Post by: Melchizadeck on Wednesday 02 May 18 17:34 BST (UK)
Trying to find the exact occupation of James Hay in 1891. He was born in Kirkden Angus in 1831/ 32.
Have notion that he may have been something to do with Quarries i.e. Stonemason, Stone Dresser or something to do with stone or slate.
Have searched and found that he was married ( wife Elizabeth ? ) and living in Tealing, Angus in 1891.
Can anyone help me find his occupation ?
He had nine children through 1855 - 1874 and perhaps Eliza, Agnes, Albert and Amelia are still living at home in 1891.
Thanks for any help
Jim Stewart

Thanks very much for this Rosie99.
Didn't expect such an immediate response to my question about James Hay occupation.
I do have another person whose occupation I am trying to find if that's ok ?

James Milne ( no dob ) married in Oathlaw, Angus in 1848 to a Helen ( ms Wilson ).
Had two daughters - Mary Milne b. 1855 in Kinnettles Angus and Agnes Milne b. 1857 in Kirriemuir, Angus.
I am hoping that his occupation stays the same for 1861 and 1891 but don't know what it is.

Hello Rosie  :)

If it's any help to the OP/you, James was a farm servant, aged 31 when Mary was born in 1855 (lots of info on 1855 certs).  His place of birth looks like Benchie  ???

According to the cert, James and Helen married in 1849, Tannadice,  and at the time of Mary's registration they'd had 1 girl (dead), 2 boys and 1 girl (living).

Benchie or Benshie is the local pronunciation of Ballinshoe.

A mention of Benchie in Scotlands Places (Hearth Tax), in Kirriemuir.

Helen Milne or Wilson died in Kirriemuir in 1858 aged 32. James then appears to have swiftly married Charlotte Edward. She appears in the 1861 Kirriemuir census as Charlotte Edward, married, wife ( but no head of household recorded). Various Milne children with her including Agnes age 4 born Kirriemuir and Mary age 6 born Tannadice. Also two older Milne children and a William Milne born Kirriemuir age 1 who is presumably from the second marriage. Charlotte described as a Brewers Wife.
Can’t find the family in 1871. By 1881 Charlotte Milne is a widow living in Glammis Road, Kirriemuir with a married daughter.

Just found them in 1871. They are down as Mill ( a common form of Milne in Angus) and are at Myles Road, Kirriemuir which is the same address that Charlotte and the children were at in 1861. James is age 47, born Kirriemuir occ Bar Carter. Two further children - George and Ann - born after 1861 but None of the older children still at home.

Had a quick look through the posts and don't think we've given the 1851, so here it is:

1851 Census
Plover Park, Tannadice
James Milne, 24, farm labourer
Helen, 25
John, 2
Catherine, 1
Isabella,visitor, 40, Brewer's wife

All born Forfarshire

Thanks to rosie99, Gadget, Forfarian and isobelw for your helpfulness in finding the info. I asked for plus a lot more besides.
Now have more details added to Hay and Milne families.
