Post by: themonkeymonkey on Sunday 06 May 18 22:32 BST (UK)
Can anyone decipher the places where parents reside please?  Katharine Park born 1796 in Longside to William Park and Barbara Ligertwood.  Thanks.

Don't recall ever seeing one like this.

William Park in Dumstone (likely Dumpstone) and Barabara Ligertwood in Burnthilloch.

Were they not married at this time?

My thought too Don as it's strange there's no 'wife' mentioned & both from different places  ???

Only other I could find was Duncanston(e) which is Insch but it looks a bit too short for all those letters.

Good map Malky!

I couldn't find a marriage on SP for William & Barbara although they may have married elsewhere or record lost?

Thanks everyone, I don't think they were married as I cannot find a death certificate for Barbara in the Park surname and there doesn't seem to be any other children but i'm still digging.  I just couldn't make out the place name at all, thanks.

Not sure if you've ruled this one out?

LIGERTWOOD BARBARA 83
SYMMONS (mms)
1866
221/ 17 Methlick (Aberdeen)

Do you have Barbara on any census records & where did Katharine end up?

Katherine married Peter Milne and lived in Longside, she died in 1844 after having 14 children!  I will look into Barbara who died in Methlick as I have not found her yet, thanks.

Would have helped if Barbara had named Katherine after her mother (or maybe she did!).

You mention lots of children for your Kathleen. Have you got a listing on some of the earlier ones?

I think the "n" indicates she was the natural child (ie.illegitimate).

If this Barbara is Katherine's mother, then she would have only been around 12 years old at the time of her birth. Not impossible though....

Another possible from Wills on SP;

Ligertwood Barbara, Miss 13/4/1838
sometime residing in Aberdeen, daughter of the deceased James Ligertwood of Tillery
T. 13/04/1838 SC1/37/15/p305 (Will) See Also SC1/36/15/5 (Inventory)
Aberdeen Sheriff Court Wills SC1/37/15

This may be worth checking as it is prior to dau Katharine's death?
Did Katharine have a James as a son?

A little here on the family of James Ligertwood Esq of Tillery that you mention, Annie:

About 1750, the Forbeses sold the estate to James Ligertwood, a magistrate and merchant in Aberdeen, and for some time convener of the county. He married Jean (not Marjory as inadvertently stated by numerous writers), daughter of John Robertson of Pitmillan and Foveran. Of their family, John was a physician in Aberdeen; Alexander was an officer in the army ; Margaret married (contract dated 21st November, 1775) Sir William Seton, sixth Bart. of Pitmedden; while Jean and Barbara died unmarried

No sign of a Katharine/Catherine etc. i.e. I wonder if she was named after her paternal g/mother?

It is always hard isn't it to pick up on mothers' names in the OPRs for Aberdeenshire, with their practice of only listing fathers' names  :-\

Definitely is, I keep going down the wrong paths with Barbara, been trying each one from the Aberdeenshire area but maybe she never was born in Aberdeenshire, aghhh.

There is a birth of a Barbara Ligertwood, 6th December 1778 at Cruden to a Richard John Ligertwood.

Flattybasher9 I keep coming back to that one, she would have been 17 when she gave birth.  Her father is down as John Ligertwood not Richard, I will see if I can dig further, thanks.
