Title: Which one is my Charlotte Hubbard?
Post by: panda40 on Monday 07 May 18 10:32 BST (UK)
Sorry in advance for the long post
I am trying to find more information about Charlotte Hubbard who is my 3xgreat grandmother.
This is what I know so far, she married Michael Ellen on 15/6/1827 at Buckland Church Dover. He was from that parish and she was from St Mary’s Dover. You can find them on the 1841 census 494/9/16/24. She is living with her husband and children and states she is from Kent. The 1841 census gives a birth year of about 1811. Sadly Charlotte dies in 1842 at the age of 37 and is buried in Chalton Dover.
Using her death age and the year of birth this gives me a rough period to look for a possible birth between 1805 and  1815. I have looked online using the parish registers on Findmypast and Family Search and located the following births

3 Jan 1802 Smeeth parents  no father mother Elizabeth Hubbard
2 Oct 1803 East Malling parents William and Sarah
8 Feb 1807 Hythe parents Stephen and Susana
25 September Rochester parents Philip and Sarah
13 April Canterbury parents George and Jemima
5 July 1812 Brabourne parents Samuel and Ann

Presuming that one of these Charlotte Hubbard’s is mine I am trying to use possible marriages to eliminate the others so I can narrow down the choice. This is here I am coming unstuck as I can’t find the following couples in the census records and therefore eliminate each Charlotte in turn.
Possible marriages for the other Charlotte’s
4 May 1827 Plaxtol to Edward Dines
27 Jan 1829 Canterbury to John William Wood
22 June 1834 Chartham to Thomas Simms
If anyone can help identify the correct birth of my Charlotte or suggest alternative ways of finding out I would be very grateful .
Thanks in advance

That date can't be right. Banns were read on 24 June, I July and 8 July. Do you have the names of the marriage witnesses? Any clues there?

Sorry for the error I was trying to copy information from two sources to ensure I had all the facts. Any luck with the other marriages to try and link back to finding the correct Charlotte?

I think you can narrow the field quite a bit. If she was enumerated as aged 30 in the 1841 census (June 1841) then it's a safe bet that she was aged at least 30-34, as adult ages were rounded down to the nearest 5 years. If she was 37 when she died in 3Q 1842, It seems likely that she was actually 35-36 in 1841, indicating a birth year of 1804-1806. So aged 21-23 at the time of her marriage.

It could be that you haven't found the right baptism yet.

Something else to look at is naming conventions: first male child named after paternal grandfather,  first female child named after maternal grandmother etc.

Thanks ShaunJ for that idea that would lead to William for a boy and Adelaide for a girl. Two of the children have Everden as a middle name so that could also be a link. I will have a look into these ideas this evening.

Thanks to help from the wonderful people on here I have been able to knock down one of my long standing brick walls. I now have the parents of Charlotte Hubbard. She was born in 1807 in Hythe, parents were Stephen and Susanna Everden. The year of birth was As sticking point but thanks to Shaun’s hint about using naming conventions I was able to confirm the link.
They are an interesting branch of my family tree to say the least ;)
Thanks again for the help
