Hello. Having impressed my friend with my english family history finds, I assured her I could easily find information about her grandparents who she never knew. However this has thrown me into the new field of Irish genealogy which I realise is a totally different story.
Her father Michael Joseph Howlett 1905 - 1958 was born in Wexford and went to the University of Dublin to study medicine in 1924. Her mother Dorothy wright was born in 1909 Laois.
Can you help me by suggesting ways to research their parents, siblings and their history in Ireland. I would like to get the birth certificate but web sites suggest it costs e40! is that right - are there cheeper ways?
any help and guidance would be very much appreciated and I am looking forward to starting this whole new areas of learning!

Hi,
You could start by looking them up on the Irish census (1911/1901)
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/
Another site that is useful -

First of all, if you are looking for Civil Registrations in Wexford you have to know the various District Offices
Baltinglass
Naas
Rathdown
Rathnew
Shillelagh
Then go to https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/civil-search.jsp and just hit Search, which will get you all Ireland.
From there check those in the above Districts from list on left.
You are looking for Michael BUT as the book index was used you get some who were only entered by Surname in the Index but entered full on the Cert.

Thank you for your help! I have spent some time looking at the two sites and can not find the birth that JJen referred to for Michael. In fact could find no Howletts at all so clearly doing something wrong. The census record I am sure is for Michael - but would like the birth / baptism certificate to ensure I am right.
Name Michael Joseph Howlett
Date of Registration 1905 - Jul-Aug-Sep[1905]
Registration district New Ross
Birth Country Ireland
Volume 4

FHL Film Number 101070
Hallmark can you tell me the site where i can apply for a photocopy of the above for €4.00. Sorry if I am missing the obvious here.
many many thanks

We weren't posting direct links to the images so Cnthree3 could learn how to find them for her/his self.

I know, from past experiences, that many love making their own discoveries so only posted "How to find them!" ;D

I fully concur with your sentiments!

I posted links to be helpful where there seemed to be a struggle finding what was required and to correct misinformation.
Personally I find it inefficient when some one posts information without a link unless it is to a paid site which would not work.
Probably shouldn't clog up Cnthree3's topic on this

There are links posted to help Cnthree3 figure out how to use the site in question and guide towards the required records, I would normally post links directly to the records as well but I thought the wording of the opening post gives the impression that the OP wanted to do the leg work themselves, my mistake perhaps.
I'm sure Cnthree3 will be delighted to get them by whatever method.

All
i can not thank you enough for all of your help. I have been away so just starting to work through all of this again. working out the different sources is really important as not only am i discovering new details for my friend but I am also able to start to research my husbands irish descendants. Iy is going to take several days (weeks?) to go through everything - so thank you again.
:)
-
Irish research can be very simple.... the difficult thing is finding Where to look
For example... the District Office they would have Registered BDM'S. In your case New Ross.
Like Sinann, I too get the impression you enjoy the hunt.
You want to research your husband's family... if from another location, you will, when ready, need that District Office for Civil Registrations.
I obviously did check to see if Michael was there before posting how to find him, as an example of how easy it is and get you off to a good start!
Good hunting!

I just want to thank you all very much for the hints and tips you have given me to research Irish ancestors for the first time. I have managed to trace 219 members of the family with confidence all but two are the right people. Back 7 generations to 1692.
I am going next week to present my findings to my friend and I know it will be an emotional evening!
thank you again. What fun I have had!

Now you'll be the local "expert" for anyone with Irish kin! ;D ;D

Tell them they are extremely lucky to have family from Wexford, not many get back past 1800 in Ireland.
1692 is WOW.
Well done.

What a good thread. Well done with your research.
Wish I could do that well with my Wexford Irish .... :(
