Title: Iris May Watton 1899-1972
Post by: dorset_nomad on Thursday 10 May 18 05:37 BST (UK)
Does anyone have any information on Iris. It appears she left UK about 1922 for Melbourne in Australia. She went back an forth a few times and died in Melbourne (I think). She married a Thomas Diamond and later became Mrs Easton. Does she have family, if so Oz or UK?  My maternal side is Watton.

Wow! Thanks for this. In fact it has answered a couple of unasked questions. Jessie would be my G'mother and I could not figure where the Wilfred came from. I always knew him as Uncle Ruddy. I am in NZ now and wondered if any Watton rellies still live in Melbourne.

Death and funeral notices mention husband, David, children, to both husbands, and grandchildren's names.

Scroll to page 27, or type 14 into the small white box.

She was cremated and the ashes collected. I was hoping they were interred in the hope of finding hubby.

There is an I M Diamond with master T M Diamond entering Melbourne on the ORMUZ, 24 August 1922, and going to Campbell St, East Kew.

I wonder if son's name was Thomas Mac Diamond, as he is named as Mac in his mother's death notice and if I am reading correctly her father's middle name was Mac.

This may confirm Thomas Mac as the son, as his wife was Laurel (deceased) at time of his mother's death:

Thomas Mac' military file is open:

DIAMOND THOMAS MAC : Service Number - 18962 : Date of birth - 31 May 1921 : Place of birth - MELBOURNE VIC : Place of enlistment - MELBOURNE : Next of Kin - DIAMOND LAUREL

https://recordsearch.naa.gov.au/SearchNRetrieve/Interface/ViewImage.aspx?B=4239709

Jamjar

Added: When he enlisted he gave his father Thomas as next of kin, who I think was on active service in New Guinea, if I'm reading correctly, page 33.

Now if father was still alive in '43, and Iris had a daughter to Easton then either she was separated/divorced from Thomas, or she had her daughter after her mid 40s.

On 20-7-40 both father and mother, as Diamond, gave constent for enlistment.

When she came back to England 1926 a daughter age 2 was with her.

I expect  she has passed on by now but I'm unable to confirm right now, so omitting her name

Thanks again. You have gave me enough ammunition to make a little progress. I believe that the daughter's name was Lauren Margret. If so then you are correct, she passed in Melbourne 1971, in fact predeceasing her mother by a year. Now to research her twin sister who also ended up in Melbourne.
On a personal note I did not even know of the existence of these two aunts until a couple of days ago. Last month I found an uncle who was a WW2 bomber crew member MIA who came from Canada. Very recently also a 3rd G'Grandmother of Scottish blood who was born and married in Quebec, sadly died early in Poole Dorset. I believe she came from the 78th Highland Fusiliers being posted in Quebec, along with General Wolfe, to fight the French there.

No, the child was not named Laurel Margaret on the shipping list offered by amondg in 1926/1927.
Lauren Margaret  was the name of  the wife of her son, Thomas Mac.
If you read the links which are in the posts given, the details can be located accurately.

Iris made a few trips back and forth to UK as has been mentioned,  and on one occasion in 1939, she took both children.

Derek, her daughter's name is in the mother's death notice. It also gives her married name. Guess you didn't read the notice.

There is no evidence that daughter is deceased.

Also, it is LAUREL Margaret as per death notice of Iris, nok on military record and death registration in Adelaide.

Amondg, the reason I thought the daughter was from second husband was because Mac had Diamond in brackets. Now I think it is likely daughter was a Diamond.

Her son Thomas Mac went to live and work in England before returning to Oz and joining the RAAF.

Hi Sue. I have gone about as far as I can go with Iris/ Thomas. I am now adding it all into the tree.  Now I will start work on Iris and Edwin so any details will be most welcome. I am also working on an element of ancestors in the late 1700's in Quebec. Life is fun.

Yes, the grandchildren are likely to be living and as per Rootschat policy of not putting names up of the living, you need to remove their names from your post.

Hi jamjar. (GILES Edwin (Mac) Death notice 22-1-2010 Death 76 Herald Sun (Melbourne) 26-1-2010) Gotta be some math mistakes. He would have been born 1934? I have him employed on the London & South Western Railway in 1927 when he resigned to be a builder apprentice. DOB there was 1895. This one died 1971 in Prahran Victoria.

Hi Sue. I have gone about as far as I can go with Iris/ Thomas.

Well, the death of Thomas has not been found.
He enlisted for ww1 and you can see his digitised record
http://www.naa.gov.au/collection/search/

This is his birth-

Thos DIAMOND
At Avenel, Victoria
Father Thos Diamond
Mother Margt Beaton CUTHBERT
1896  #24963

These parents had several children.

Iris May and Thomas DIAMOND, after their marriage can be seen on the Victorian electoral roll at several different places in Victoria, including Stawell in 1937. About 1939 at Stawell he was declared bankrupt.

https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/11252791

In 1942 Iris May and Thomas DIAMOND are living at 407 Pt Nepean Rd., Mentone and this is the last sighting of them together.

This death notice 1942, for the mother of Thomas DIAMOND implies he lives still at Mordialloc.
https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/11984233

His father died in 1951 and this death notice names his son Thomas as living in Port Melbourne1951.
Certainly no hint he is deceased.
https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/23042924

However he is not on Electoral Roll.

By 1949 Iris is Iris May EASTON living at the same 1942 address 407 Pt Nepean Rd., Mentone with David EASTON.

By the way, the army file for Thomas DIAMOND husband of Iris contains a letter from Miss Annie CUPIT of Nottingham, whose tone seems urgent. It is in 1920, so just after his discharge. She requests headquarters to pass the "enclosed letter" to Thomas DIAMOND.

Free BMD  births is worth a search in respect of this note. :P
