Title: Mary Ann Bevan Hirwain
Post by: parf on Thursday 10 May 18 10:48 BST (UK)
Hello,

Ive just started back to looking into my Bevan family, and Im looking for Mary Ann Bevan with her family in 1871 and before.  From her marriage certificate of 1877 to Llewellyn Thomas, she says she is 21 years old and that her father was William Bevan a collier. On the census after she married she says she was born in Hirwain, her year of birth varies from 1854-1856 on different census.

Trying to find her birth certificate to find out who her mother was, but not having much luck at the moment and cant seem to pinpoint her before she is married, on her marriage certificate it says she is living in Pencoed.

Hope someone can help find her,
Jan

Hello
There is a christening for the older son at Wesleyian chapel Merthyr Tydfil
William Bevan s of William Bevan of Hirwan in the parish of Aberdare and Ann his wife d of John and Ann David 1.1.1832 .
Sons Lewis and Morgan  have birth registrations with mother Davis.

William Bevan married Ann Hopkins at Aberdare 25.7.1824 but i can't see if she is a widow or spinster.

Thanks for the finds, I also found them but thought that the mothers age was very old to have an 8yr old (66yrs) so didnt think I was right. According to an old email I just found from 2008, when I requested them to search for Mary Ann Bevan, with father William, a collier, with mother Ann, Rhondda-Cynon-Taff register office says they only have one Mary Ann Bevan with a father William, but he is not a collier, and the mothers name is not Ann !!! I just emailed again today to ask if they have a Mary Ann Bevan with father William and they said they dont have any Mary Anns only Marys !!!
Feel very confused !!
As to the question of witnesses on her marriage certificate of 1877,she married in Bridgend Register Office,  they were Thomas Thomas and Catherine Llewellyn

Have looked at 1871 and Mary Ann is listed as a scholar on the census. She was 18 yrs old at the time, isnt that a bit late to still be a scholar or could she have been studying to be a Nurse ? as I know she was a Nurse/midwife in latter years.

Also have traced that family back to 1851 and 1841 census (I think its them), and there is already a daughter on 1841 census called Mary, so would they then have named another daughter Mary Ann ?

Any ideas ??
Thanks
Jan

I would think there's a good chance that  Mary Ann is William and Ann's grandaughter and her birth may have been registered under a different surname, as if the parents were married, even if they weren't.

Ooh, thats another option, I wish there was a way of finding out her birth date off somewhere other that her birth certificate. She died in 1933 so missed 1939 register. Would a date of birth been on School records ?

Yes thats her and Llewellyns children, (my granded was Thomas John).  Llewellyns parents were David and Sophia, and siblings were Hannah, Thomas, Mary, John and David.

Hello
Let's look at the Mary Ann's Ladyhawk found born in Merthyr Tydfil.
She's not the one Bevan and Griffiths because that little girl is the daughter of Joseph Bevan and Mary Griffiths living on the 1861 census with grandparents Edmund and Rachel Griffiths.

It looks like the other born Mar 1858 died in June 1858 so no luck there.
So Merthyr Tydfil register office are right when they say there are no Mary Ann's.

It does look like that Mary d of William and Catherine is a more likely prospect. And yes you're right the school records  would give a date of birth and usually a father. So you could find a Mary Ann ,father William and have a date of birth and know for certain. How many schools could there be in Hirwan?
Or did she have a gravestone? The date of birth is usually on that.

Thanks all for trying to solve the mystery !!

If she was only Mary when she was with the family, I wonder why she is so definitely Mary Ann on everything else I have found, Marriage cert, my grandads birth certificate, her headstone in Coychurch (which has no birth dates unfortunately), Midwife record on Ancestry, and all the census after married, all have her as Mary Ann !!

Im guessing im never going to find out much more about her than I already know  :(
