Title: William Edwards, farmer of Sproxton m to Jane Cussons of Ampleforth
Post by: emmalydia on Friday 11 May 18 03:19 BST (UK)
I would be thrilled with any information I could receive about the above Wm Edwards.  I have just proved through a Cussons Will that he is definitely my 3xgreat grandfather who would have been born abt 1715.  He married Jane in 1741 at Oswaldkirk and so far I have found 7 children born at Helmsley.  I can't find his birth at present and anything about his farm.  I have more information on Jane.

Hello
Are you sure about that birth date?
Looking at the family there seems to be a William Edward/s at Helmsley  having children.
He married Hannah Milner 20.1.1701 who was buried 17.11.1713.
He then seems to have remarried a Margaret Walton 3.12.1715 ( 12.7.1749 she was buried ).
Children
Elizabeth 1.11.1702
William Feb 1704
Robert 23.2.1706
Maria 29.4.1711

William senior bapt 25.8.1678 s of Robert
Siblings Elizabeth 18.3.1676 and Bridget 23.11.1684

Hi,

Can't help with the children but I have a note of a grandson William Edwards who died before 1819, though his wife was still alive then

Dear Ciderdrinker
I am guessing at the date of birth purely on the fact that he didn't marry Jane Cussons until 1741 and was having children till 1759 but it is possible he is the Wm born 1704.  I will certainly put that down as a possibility.  Thank you so much for this information.  I don't know how to get info on Helmsley at present.

Dear Snow queen
Yes this is my 3xgreat grandfather who died in Deptford in 1815 and whose wife was definitely still alive.  This fact was referred to in the Will of George Cussons and set me on this particular trail.
Interested to know why you have a note of that - are you also interested in this line?  I have lots of later information from Deptford onwards.
Thanks for the reply

Second reply to Ciderdrinker

Actually I think this information may be on FindMyPast.  I remember now I tried it out last week and got one record but the rest came up as unavailable even though the icon was there.  I'll try again now.

Hi,

I have an original Will of George Cussons which is where I got the information.  Would be interested in how William Edwards grandson of William and Jane links to the William Edwards in Deptford

Kind regards

The Wm Edwards of Deptford is the grandson of Wm and Jane.  If you look closely at the Will you can see the word Deptford there.  My Wm died in 1815 and also left a Will that has helped me sort out the family from there.  I knew he was born in or close to 1773 from his death records and was sure he came from Yorkshire as all his friends, executors of his Will, etc. were from Yorkshire.  Geo Cussons used to walk over to the Edwards church in Deptford from his residence in Wardour Street because he was best friends with the minister of their church who also came from Helmsley (St Paul Deptford)

Hi EmmaLydia,

OK, I see it in the Will.   Do you have a death for Jane Cussons as I can see who I think could be her buried in Kirkdale but from Harome (near Helmsley)

Hi Lyn

No I don't have a death for Jane but I have seen Harome mentioned somewhere.  Are you researching the Cussons side of the family?  I am hoping to find more Edwards Wills at some stage as my Wm of Deptford was very well off for a man who died at age 42 and had 8 children and I've always thought there was inherited money.  The remaining family moved 'up' from Deptford to Greenwich.

Message for Snowqueen

I am very rusty with Rootschat and couldn't work out how to reply to your personal message.  I wanted to say that I presume you have read George Cussons' Memoir online.  It was most interesting and named many of the people you would be researching.  It's where I found the information that George walked to Deptford to visit his friend Dr Conyers who was Rector there after many years at Helmsley.  Another connection for me.   Do you know how Hannah Flintoft is related to Margery Flintoft?

Hi,

I've been meaning to go to the British Library for years to read George's memoirs but easier if it's online.  I'd be very grateful if you could please send me the link and I'll have a read.  I've already got info on George's brothers and sisters and some of their children etc (if you need anything let me know) but you never know, it might provide some more useful links.

They are all a blinking nightmare - hopping from one place to another - but we'll catch them eventually!!!

I think I can see Margery Flintoft's birth but can't figure out if her dad is from Hawnby or not.  I know that there is a Flintoft link to land in Ampleforth but that's as far as I've got.  Will have another look at my records and see if I can spot anything.

The friend James Flintoft you can see in George's Will - as far as I know he's the nephew of his wife.

Hi Lyn

Here it is
Memoirs of Mr. George Cussons of London; who departed this life, ...
https://books.google.com.au/books?id=y_1iAAAAcAAJ

if this doesn't work just google "George Cussons" memoir - it's on a few sites but not all of them have it online.  Very detailed information

If you could just let me know if you come across the name Edwards in any of your research I would be most grateful.

Helen
