Title: William COOPER
Post by: SecondLife on Sunday 13 May 18 15:43 BST (UK)
Could do with some help please as at the moment I do not have access to worldwide sub.  I have William COOPER born in Darenth, Kent, UK and baptised on the 25 April 1799 in Darenth to parents John Cooper and Mary Anne Brown.  The next time I find William appears to be in Australia were he marries Mary Ann Morley and later Lucinda Campbell.

What I cannot find is the reason he went to Australia although I suspect it may be transportation as he appears to have been in trouble while there.  There are several family trees and even one showing the reason why he was transported but they all have his birth and baptism place incorrect.

If I should be looking in Kent rather than here please let me know and I will re-post.  Thank you

Added: Based on the site provided by Essie, this death is supposed to be his:

It also has him born in 1803

Hi Secondlife,

What do you have to show that the WC who marries MA Morley in 1826 in Australia was baptised in Darenth Kent?
Do you have any records that he completed in Australia that show his place and date of birth?
What occupation do you have for WC?
How do you know that he had been in trouble previously?

If you can add as much detail as possible (including sources) then you will have a greater chance of the people on here helping you.

Kind regards,
Jo  :)

Which William COOPER ….   :)  :) :)

NSW Archives has indexed Mary Ann MORLEY’s permission to marriage at Newcastle in 1826, to a William COWPER … twice indexed as Cowper.   She was aged 19, born in NSW.  He was aged 27, per Lord Melville 2, and still under Bond.  Rev George A MIDDLETON.

Here is image of that 1826 marriage, Christ Church, Hexham NSW   Entry No. 3.

Add, so need to search under both spellings COWPER and COOPER ... and just on COOPER there's ummmmmmm.... pages of Prisoners of the Crown named William COOPER ....  :)

William was received aboard the prison hulk the Justitia at  Woolwich Kent on 26 May 1818.

His crime was burglary and he was convicted along with three others on the same date for the same crime.

I guess we need to know why SecondLife thinks it's who he's looking for, given than the year and place of birth don't match to William the convict.

VERY VERY VERY SPECULATIVE.

NSW 1841 Census Newcastle

Return # 33
Mary Ann COOPER … in her establishment there’s :
2 married males
4 single males
2 married females
2 single females

Of the six males
4 were born in the colony
1 is otherwise free
1 is bonded under a private assignment
None are aged under two
1 is aged two to under seven
2 are aged seven to under fourteen
1 is aged fourteen and under twenty-one
2 are aged twenty-one and under forty-five
0 are aged forty-five and under sixty
0 are aged sixty and upwards.

Of the four females
2 were born in the colony
1 arrived free
1 is otherwise free
0 are aged under two
1 is aged two to under seven
1 are aged seven to under fourteen
0 is aged fourteen and under twenty-one
2 are aged twenty-one and under forty-five
0 are aged forty-five and under sixty
0 are aged sixty and upwards.

9 of these 10 are Church of England
1 is Roman Catholic

2 are Mechanics/Artificers
8 are other persons not included in following classes:
(so none of the 8 are) Landed Proprietors, Merchants, Bankers Professional, shopkeepers, retail dealers, Mechanics /Artificers, Shepherds/keepers of sheep, Gardeners, Stockmen, engaged in Agriculture, Domestic Service.

Mary Ann COOPER’s establishment is of Wood, Unfinished, Inhabited.

NOTICE, IF (and it is a huge IF, very very speculative IF…) anyway, notice that there’s no mention of William COOPER by name at this establishment.

I wonder about how our OP's ancestor connects to any of the William Cooper/Cowper chaps in New South Wales in the 1820s...

Thank you so much for your help.

I do have the baptism certificate for the 25 Apr 1799 in Darenth Kent.

Why do I think the Wm Cooper sent to Australia may be mine, well I cannot find him anywhere in the UK.

I am unsure whether WC sentenced at Nottinghamshire Assizes is mine as that, even in today's terms, is a long way from where he lived.

If he was sent from Woolwich then that is more likely.

Think I need to sit down and read through all your fabulous answers, thank you so much for your help
