Hello,
Jethro's wife was Anne and the couple were christening children in Farringdon in the mid 1750s. Jethro was buried in Farringdon on the 19th of May 1781, with an estimated year of birth of around 1724. There was one Jethro Beal who was rector of Farringdon in the 1650s, so there's a good chance the two are related. I'm interested in a marriage or baptism for Jethro.
Any help would be appreciated!

Hi Adam
This is probably the marriage:
02 May 1749 Beal Jethro & Harrison Anne at Farringdon
And there are two baptisms so the first Jethro probably died:
12 Dec 1715 Son of Jethro Jethro & Eliz Beal at Farringdon
13 Apr 1724 Son of Jethro Jethro & Eliz Beal at Farringdon

That's great! Thanks so much! Is there anything you can find on Jethro Sr.?
-
Jethro seniors possible burial is on familysearch, maybe other information -have you looked there
-
I'll take a look now. I'm hoping it will trace back to the rector of Farringdon by the same name!
-
According to Google he was Oxford-educated, if I recall correctly.

Found his burial:

Hi again Adam
This may well be Jethro snr's marriage.
27 Oct 1710 Beal Jethro & Knight Elizabeth at Farringdon
The only earlier baptism at Farringdon is:
26 Feb 1678/9 Son Jethro of Jethro & Mary Beale at Farringdon.

Thanks Peter! This line of Jethros seems to be leading perfectly back to the Jethro Beal that was rector until his 1658 death. Is that where records stop, or can you dig any further back? I'm very grateful to you for all of this!

Possible marriage?
Jethro Beal and Mary Emes
2nd of February 1659
East Tisted, Hampshire (just north of Farringdon)

Hi again Adam,
The only earlier marriage I can see is:
22 Oct 1657 Beale Jethro jun & Thomas Mary at Farringdon
(This certainly seems to indicate that there was still a Jethro senior still alive at this point. )

Yes, that would be more likely. Could he be the son of Jethro the rector? He died in 1658, although we obviously can only speculate to their exact relationship.
-
Jethro Beal(e) the rector of Farringdon left a widow Mary, two sons (Peter & Jethro),two daughters Anne & Mary (he also had two other daughters who pre-deceased him Judith & Abigail), and a grandson John, son of his son Jethro. There is mention of his 'son Longworth' who appears to be Anne's husband, and his 'brother Norton' - possibly a brother in law.

Thanks! That would explain why my Jethro is described as Jethro junior on his 1657 marriage as his father was still living.

Could this be Jethro Sr.'s baptism?

If you mean Jethro the rector, yes, that is likely given the father's name. It would also fit with the timeline for his career as a clergyman. Check that out at the Clergy database

Is this him?

Dates to 1660, not 1658 ???

There was only one rector of Farringdon at that time and Jethro Beale is not that common a name.
The records may be going by when the next rector was appointed rather than when the previous one died. 1658 was still in the Commonwealth period when things got a little messy as far as parish records are concerned.

That was my thinking was! Goodness knows what the unruly folk of Farringdon did during those 2 barren years without spiritual guidance ;D
My line therefore is:
Me
My Dad
My Grandad
Alexander G. MacGregor (b. 1895, Hornsey)
Helen Sarah Streater (b. 1864, Farringdon)
George Streater (b. 1821, Farringdon)
Lucy Norgate (b. 1779, Farringdon)
Elizabeth Beal (b. 1756, Farringdon)
Jethro Beal (b. 1724, Farringdon)
Jethro Beal (b. 1678/9, Farringdon)
Jethro Beal Jr. (b. ?)
Jethro Beal, Rector
-
Jethro Beal Jr. (b. ?) - baptised 30 Oct 1631 at Farringdon by the looks of it.

Thanks! That's the final date. Is there a marriage for Jethro Sr. and Mary?
-
And also, is there anything on the Beal ladies?
They are:
Mary Thomas (m. 1657, Farringdon)
Elizabeth Knight (m. 1710, Farringdon)
Anne Harrison (m. 1749, Farringdon)

Is there a marriage for Jethro Sr. and Mary?
Not that I can find in Hampshire.
I think it is possible that Jethro junior married twice - first to Mary Thomas and then to Marie Ames/Emes. The Farringdon burials record the burial of Mary Beale junior on 10 October 1658. Then intriguingly there is another for Marie Beale on 1 Dec 1658. Since Jethro the rector mentions his wife Mary in his will, she might be the December burial.
Jethro the rector's children were baptised in Farringdon. Only for Abigail is his wife named (Mary).
In 1652, there is Jethro junior's son John baptised in Farringdon - and his mother's name is Ann! Jethro baptised in 1658 has the mother Mary and his baptism date is the same day as the burial of Mary Beale junior - 10 October.
The Farringdon registers are not complete: there are only a few entries for the period 1635-50 with pages cut out. There is also a gap in the marriages 1632-56.
With ladies you mention, they could be tricky to identify for certain without something extra. None of them have names that are likely to be unique and there is no clue as to their parish of birth. With marriage records at that date, it cannot be guaranteed that the individual parishes are recorded if they differ from the parish where the marriage took place.

Thanks for all of that! My third Jethro Beal was born in 1678/9 to Jethro and Mary Beal, so he must be the son of the second marriage of Jethro Jr. presumably.
