Hello all. I'm researching John Simmins Tout, who was born at Portobello Barracks in July 1874. His father George Henry Tout looks to have been a career soldier. He and his wife Elizabeth were in Aldershot in 1871 and Devonport by 1876. Any thoughts on how I can research why he might have been stationed in Dublin, how long he was there and for what purpose? Thanks, Steve.

If he was the George TOUT born in Barnstable in 1838, his military records are on Findmypast.
Edit.
Unfortunately his postings are not listed.

BTW His baptism say Portobello Barracks but his birth cert says Roseanna Place which no doubt was near the barracks.

I can't see it on the newer maps but it's on this old one, just across the road from the barracks

Units were rotated around the various "home" barracks for training and exercises etc, so probably the reason for him being in Dublin.
