No thanks Suz, not now I know she was not Christopher's wife. I am trying to find Harriet Harman's birth (5 possibilities so far!) and details of her first marriage to Mr Downes.

Thank you Carole and Suz.
Do you think Maidstone would be the RD for Sundbridge? If so, this could be Harriet's birth registration:
HARMAN, HARRIET mmn SHARP
GRO Reference: 1838 D Quarter in MAIDSTONE Volume 05 Page 283
-
Think it’s Sundridge rather than Sundbridge. If so it came under Sevenoaks until 1941. I think she may have been born just prior to Civil Reg
-
Family Search has the following -
England Births and Christenings
Name Harriet Harman
Christened 3rd May 1835 at Sundridge, Kent
Father - James Harman
Mother - Eliza
-
It looks as though James' first wife Eliza (Harriet's mother) dies in Bromley district, Dec quarter of 1839 aged 25. James re-marries in the June quarter of 1841 (Bromley) to Caroline Ashdown.

The marriage found by Suz was 1858
The 1841 entry is on Family Search

FS also has a baptism for Lucy in 1828 under Steedman

Just to confuse things further - I too think that Christopher's first marriage is the one between William Christopher Stedman and Elizabeth Marshall in 1858.
Had problems trying to find Christopher on census - no wonder, on various census after he married he is listed as 'Charles' or 'Charles C'! One of his children was an Albert bc.1872 - found him on new GRO index and mothers maiden name was Marshall. Looks like first wife died in 1896.
