Title: Help With Pension Record Please
Post by: stevejgarton on Tuesday 15 May 18 10:00 BST (UK)
I have found a pension record I believe is for my gg grandfather Charles Henning and I understand that I can order copies of the application file from the National Archives website. However I am unsure as to whether or not the pension record is based on Federal military service rather than state or confererate.

This is the link to the document I have found: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:KDYY-QT6

Also Charles would have been 58 years old at the time of the invalid date on the pension record, is that too old to have served, or is this record for another Charles Henning with a wife Anna M Henning?

I would be very grateful for some guidance before I part with any money as the fee's are quite high.

NB: Seems the 32nd Massachusetts Voluntary Infantry regiment disbanded in 1865. My Charles Henning emigrated to the US sometime between 1861-1863 and was not naturalized until 1868. Is it likely he could have been a volunteer, would they have accepted non US citizens?

Company Descriptive Card:
Company L, 32 Reg't, Mass. Infantry

Charles Henning
Age: 30
Height: 5' 8 1/2"
Complexion:  Dark
Eyes:  Black
Hair:  Brown
Born:  Norway  (Throndhjenn?)
Occupation:  Carpenter
Drafted:  term of 3 years
Date of draft:  29 Aug 1863

If this is your guy, I can probably provide most of his service records.  He apparently enlisted as a substitute for Darby Cately/Gately.

Wow Steve, I've just seen this.  I see the widow's filing was from NJ so it has to be the family we've been looking at.  How great!

Age, born Norway & a Carpenter - he's definitely looking more & more like a match for the Charles previously in Hull.  Excited for you  :D

Oh, and the birth place matches that found by Jamcat too.

How great is rootschat  ;D

Yes Jomot and Jamcat I now have the war records for Charles thanks to Genealiza   :D :D

I am now on the trail of the pension records. Looking at the archives.gov website it says:

Form Number:   NATF 85
Use to:   Order copies of military pension application files based on Federal (not State or Confederate) service between 1775 and 1903 (before World War I).

What I need to clarify is whether the pension application made by Charles who was in the 32nd Massachusetts Infantry on the Union side in 1863 - 1865 is covered by the above. My knowledge of American history is not good so any guidance would be appreciated.

The research guide implies that this is the right form & should be covered, but I'm not certain either.  I hope so!

Let us know how you get on.

Exciting news Jomot & Jamcat I now have 2 documents with Charles Henning signature on, one UK and one US, and they look pretty much the same, see this post for the images: http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=791460.msg6501489#msg6501489

An update from NARA, they have found the file for Charles Henning, they have taken my payment, and it is "Awaiting Shipment", which according to the guide lines on the website means I should be in receipt of the files by email within 2 - 10 days. So excited anticipating putting some flesh on the bones of a 20 year old brick wall.

Ok I have received the file today comprising 66 pages. Have had a quick look through and though it will take some time to assimilate all the information I am disappointed that there are no certificates other than the death record for Charles which I already had.
It mainly consists of affidavits from various people in support of his widows pension application. There is however plenty of interesting stuff:

I noted a few instances where it was sworn that Charles was never married before he married Anne?Anna.

There is no obvious mention of his brief stay in the UK, and he stated that he was from Norway.

Charles appeared to have been awarded a disability pension of $8 per month because of an umbilical hernia, though he also claimed for chronic rheumatism, bad eyesight, and general debility, all caused by his military service.

The "mystery" of Graf/Petersen has been resolved. Ann was born Anna Graff. She married Hans Peterson Nov 8th 1861. Hans passed away 4th August 1865 and she then married Charles on 15th October 1865......she didnt hang around as a grieving widow for long..... The marriage was conducted by the pastor of the Bethel Ship, Norwegian M E Church, 299 Carroll Street, Brooklyn, New York. They both gave their address as 884 Atlantic Avenue, and ages 32 and 28.

One immediate query under "married at" it says No.6 Rector Street. and that is also where Hans Petersen died, so assuming it was where he and Anna were living, I presume it was a boarding house as that it what Hans occupation was. So Charles & Anna were married at home???

The only Hans Peterson I can find in NY around that time is in the 1860 census aged 39, a bricklayer from Norway.  Wife (?) was Helina.

I can't see any address on that census but the Brooklyn City Directory for 1862 has a Hans Peterson, Mason, at 5 Vine.

So far I can't anything about 6 Rector Street.

A Charles Graff was one of the people who signed an affidavit in support of Anna Henning, and also her brother John Graff who signed an affidavit in 1904 aged 69, so her elder by 2 years.

Thanks Jomot and the address ties in with that mentioned on the letter from Cypress Hills Cemetery where he was buried.
