Title: Laptop start button.
Post by: doch on Tuesday 15 May 18 19:07 BST (UK)
Hi all,I'm having trouble with my laptop,a lenovo ideapad 110. for the last couple of days when i click on the start button it doesn't function, the speaker volume button doesn't work either.everything else works fine apart from these two buttons, but without a working start button i can't access my pictures to upload some of my recent shots.i googled the symptoms but found the answers a bit beyond my (very limited ability)does anyone out there have a not too techy answer to this??
                        regards,john.

Firstly can you explain which button is the "start button".
The start button is what you turn your laptop on with.
Are you referring to the icon you "click onto" to access your photos.

Firstly can you explain which button is the "start button".

The Windows start button is by default on the bottom left of the taskbar.

This sounds like a simple fix to try.

https://www.easytechguides.com/windows-8-start-button-problem.html

In the meantime:

Right click in an empty space on your Taskbar
Choose Start Task Manager
Choose 'File', then 'New Task', then 'Browse' to open whichever file or folder you want.

So:
The taskbar in general is working - you can open Task Manager.
Clicking on the Start button at the left hand end of the taskbar does nothing.
The "Windows" button on the keyboard does nothing.
Have you tried the old-fashioned way of getting the start menu - Control-Esc ?

If there's still no joy, try a clean restart. You can do this from Task Manager. Click on "More Details" at the bottom, then the File menu of the fresh view should have Run New Task. Enter
   shutdown /r
Tick the box for Admin Privileges and click OK.
Windows should then perform the same actions as if you had selected Restart from the Start menu.
Note that Restart does more in the way of initialising things than a normal Shutdown followed by switching on with the power button.

All,thanks for your advice.i followed hallmarks instruction and reset this infernal machine,it worked alright as in i can now access apps via the start button, the downside (sorry Hallmark )is there are a few apps missing, and all bookmarks are gone with their passwords, now i'll have to try and remember all the daft words i used as passwords for these sites.but not to worry i could be in a worse place than trying to access a few websites,so thanks again all and no doubt i'll be back looking for more help soon ::)

"How often do you defragment?"

Every time the dilithium crystals on the Enterprise transporter beam fail.  I'm in bits.

I couldn't imagine what a Defragment is,as I said before i'm not the most techy minded person ever. all I want from my machine is to turn it on in the evening,go to my favourites, and browse around,if iv'e been out with my camera, upload a few pics, maybe edit them and post them up onto flickr, all simple enough stuff.it's when something happens to prevent that happening the panic starts.i'm probably only using a fraction of this laptops capabilities.

Basically, it puts all files back where they should be and in correct order

You obviously had all the files needed BUT the computer couldn't find where the file had been put!

I do mine once a week and don't even notice it running.

The Reset you did is much the same except that it puts all your Files aside and reassembles Windows first

Obviously as Computer can find what it needs faster it keeps computer from getting sluggish trying to find Files.

Defragmenting does not change how things work. It just improves access speeds for some files.
Imagine a file which occupies sectors 1000, 1001, 89975438, 899754389, 902 and 903.
Moving the data around so that the sectors are all in a row means that the heads don't have to zoom forwards and backwards, which is the slowest operation on a disk drive.

Windows 7 defragments drives on a timer, usually set to the middle of the night; Windows 8 and 10 do it automatically when the machine is idle.

If you have a solid-state drive, defragmenting doesn't improve speeds; it takes the same amount of time to reach any sector. Indeed, it wears out the drive as flash memory can survive only a limited (if large) number of cycles. Windows 8.1 and 10 are usually able to spot solid-state drives and disable automatic defrag.
