Title: Marriage of Thomas Moss/Morse to Anne ?? C1789 Dagenham ares
Post by: nannyj on Tuesday 15 May 18 23:10 BST (UK)
I have these two, my 5x ggparents having children Mary 1789, John 1791 and my 4x ggf in 1793 Edward. All in Dagenham. Can’t find a marriage for them or baptism for Thomas.
Can anyone else find it? I have SEAX but am hopeless with family search!
Thanks.

Hi
The nearest one I can come up with is
Thomas Moss + Anne Cheeven at Walthamstow, 31 Oct 1784
He was a widower, she wasn't!
That is on FamilySearch, FreeReg (and Boyds), so you may have seen it.
John

Hi. Thanks. No I hadn’t seen that. Will have a look on SEAX and see if there’s any more info.

Looked up Walthamstow. No other details but I also looked up births and deaths. There were a few children baptised between 1785 and November 1788 (the one in Dagenham was baptised Jun 1789 though) and no more after that. Couldn’t find a death for Thomas or Anne in Walthamstow either.

Hi
It might be promising - more suggestions welcome though!
Have you got a death/burial for Thomas (and Anne) for age/approx birth year? Did they leave Dagenham?

Hi again
If your Edward is the chap around in the census later, born circa 1794 and married to Mary -
Just picking out a baptism of one of their children at St Margaret Barking, John Thomas in 1821 - abode given is Barkingside, which of course is in the northern half of Ilford

And there is a burial at St Margaret in the same year - just two months earlier in fact - of a Thomas Moss, age 73. Abode is Barkingside!

There's an Ann Moss buried at Barking in 1827, age 80. So, a similar age to Thomas, don't know that it's his wife of course - and it would make her 45 or 46 when Edward was born, was he the last? On the other hand it says for abode Barking Workhouse Poor, so might her age have become slightly exaggerated or rounded?
I wanted her to be ten years younger! As there is an Ann Chevins baptized at Barking, 16 May 1756

Yes Edward was his son. Born Dagenham but lived in barking with his wife Mary. Yes to last child too.

On those baptisms in 1788 and 1789 to Thomas + Anne
We have
Ruth Moss, 16 November 1788, Walthamstow
Mary Morse, 23 August 1789, Barking Dagenham

I am becoming quite pessimistic about the Walthamstow marriage (sorry!)
A Ruth Moss married Thomas Burley, 19 Oct 1828, Leyton
Ruth Burley born Walthamstow circa 1786 in a Bedfordshire workhouse in 1851

An Elizabeth Moss marriage in Walthamstow in 1807 (unfortunately groom is James Smith).
Could she have been the Elizabeth baptized there, 24 June 1787 to Thomas and Anne?

But, more positively, I do think the Thomas buried in Barking in 1821 could be your man.

Back on the trail...
A John Moss baptized at Romford, 17 Dec 1784
Parents Thomas and Ann
Transcript indicates they were in Dagenham.

If the right couple, presumably John must have died before 1791.

Could they have made their way down from the Yeldhams?
Thomas Moss, baptized 20 June 1748, Little Yeldham
Fits age on that burial in Barking!

Thomas Moss married Ann Ward, 21 June 1774, Great Yeldham

Baptisms following
Thomas Moss, 20 August 1775, Little Yeldham
Joseph Moss, 30 March 1777, Great Yeldham
Ann Moss, 4 April 1779, Great Yeldham
Sarah Moss, 12 August 1781, Great Yeldham

May be nothing further there? Perhaps a move and next child John in Dagenham and baptized in Romford in 1784?

Baptisms following
Joseph Moss, 30 March 1777, Great Yeldham

There's a marriage in Barking, 28 July 1805
Joseph Moss + Ann Mayling

Later baptisms to Joseph and Ann give abode as Barkingside.

Burial at Barking in 1821 (just before Thomas)
Joseph Moss
abode Barkingside
buried 3 January
age 44

As with Thomas, the age given on the burial is a pretty good match for the Yeldham baptism.
